Owner description: Victoria Mansion, also known as the Morse-Libby House, is the finest example of residential design from the pre-Civil War era in America. With superb architecture and well-preserved original interiors that were among the most lavish and sophisticated in their day, it is an unparalleled document of America’s highest aspirations in architecture, interior design, and the decorative arts. Our history, a quick tour, and our present-day efforts at restoring the Mansion convey an impression of the significance of this unique site, which is of national and even international importance.

The mansion was interesting and had interesting features given the time it was constructed. However, being from Virginia and having traveled abroad, I have seen more impressive mansions built during and prior to the same period.

We kind of happened upon this house while a bit lost in Portland. They were still offering tours late in the day and we joined one. So glad we did. Sam, the tour guide, was terrific in explaining the ornate and beautiful 1858 home owned by a businessman who spent the Civil War in New Orleans and never saw the completed house until 1866. Most of the paint and furnishings are original. Stained glass windows, grand staircase, everything to awe you about 19th century wealth.

This house is gorgeous. The coolest part is the owner took pictures of the rooms when she sold the house in the early 20th century, sold it completely furnished and you could compare the pictures with the current rooms. Most of the furnishings are original from the 1860s. Very informative docent gave us the history of the house and the families that lived there.

The detail and artistry of the interior walls, floors, furniture is incredible.

Really interesting, almost 90% original furnishings and decor. Photos from the time period allow then and now comparisons! Advanced for its time, lots of trompe l' oeil features, amazing stained glass. Tour guide was knowledgeable and the 45 minute tour was the perfect length. Recommend!

My mom and I toured the Victoria Mansion while on vacation in Portland. This place is really interesting, especially for anyone who enjoys history and/or majestic houses. Our tour guide, Suzi, was great -- very knowledgeable, and funny. Apparently, they also decorate every inch of the house at the winter holiday season, at which time visitors are allowed to wander the house on their own. The tour was a 1/2 hour.
