Owner description: Victoria Mansion, also known as the Morse-Libby House, is the finest example of residential design from the pre-Civil War era in America. With superb architecture and well-preserved original interiors that were among the most lavish and sophisticated in their day, it is an unparalleled document of America’s highest aspirations in architecture, interior design, and the decorative arts. Our history, a quick tour, and our present-day efforts at restoring the Mansion convey an impression of the significance of this unique site, which is of national and even international importance.

“Christmastime is Best”
Reviewed October 20, 2012

This historic mansion goes all out at Christmastime to decorate in the Victorian style of old. There is a tour that you can take. To be frank, it is really a shame that this building of old is so under-used. Portlanders do not frequent this site, really. I wish that it was used more often for public events, and it is dark much of the time, sadly.

“Amazing story, beautiful wood work, worth the time when in Portland Maine”
Reviewed October 19, 2012

The guide tour runs on the .15 and .45 of the hour. Was told takes about 45 minutes, but our guide Jim was obviously very enthused about this mansion, our tour took an hour. He is very knowledgeable, full of stories. This mansion was close to getting sold to be built as a gas station!!

So glad the money will go to continuous restoration of this place. The wood work is amazing, and rare now, since the American chestnuts used have died from diseases in this area (according to Jim)

Check out the ceiling art work, details, and skylights. Simply amazing. $15 pp fee

“Beautifully Restoration”
Reviewed October 5, 2012

Very friendly tour guides lead you through the mansion and points out the fine details of this lovely local mansion. They've worked very hard to put the mansion back into it's original state with original furniture and reproductions or refurbished pieces. Very nice tour.

“Meticulous condition, over the top Victorian”
Reviewed October 5, 2012

This is a building that no sensible person would have built here in Maine (brownstone/sandstone simply don't do well in a climate that freezes). But since it's here and a group of dedicated preservationists and Victoriana-buffs have rescued the property from the bulldozers and a fate as a gas station -- don't miss it if you like a beautifully preserved old house museum. The flying staircase is gorgeous, the woodwork lovely and the furnishings over-the-top. Not to be missed at Christmas!

“One hundred and sixty year old gem”
Reviewed September 30, 2012

In the heart of Portland, Maine, this wonderfully preserved old house is something to see. Only two families have ever lived there. Relatives have returned many of the furnishings so that you get a real feel for what life was like. The gift shop attached to the Victoria Mansion is especially good. The buyer has a real feel for what is unique.
