Take the Portland Paddle tour because it is worthwhile to get inside. The city does a good job keeping the fort clear of litter thanks to the Maine Trails Network and Portland Paddle. Beautiful architecture and the state of ruin with trees and bird life in the upper regions just adds to the evocative atmosphere. Climb to the top for great vista of Casco Bay and Portland Harbor.

Imposing from the water and very approachable no matter what kind of boat. Fort is very imposing sitting guard over the harbor. Clean good walk throu. Not overly organized which suited me just fine.

Have sailed past many times and was always wanting to visit. Finally we did visit and it did not disappoint. Really fun place to bring a picnic lunch.

Begun in 1858, Fort Gorges was completed in 1865 just as the Civil War ended. During renovation in the late 1860s, sand and sod were added to the top level of its granite ramparts to protect its gun encasements and powder magazines from attacks. Mature trees, shrubs, and grasses now grow in this soil. At dawn and dusk it’s a fine subject and a great backdrop for photographers. The fort is a National Historical Landmark and is open to the public as a park. It’s accessible only by private watercraft. Several Casco Bay Lines ferry routes pass near it. The fort is one of the most prominent features near Portland Harbor in Casco Bay.

A beautiful small island at the entrance to Portland harbor that reminds us of Portland's rich history.
