This is a very interesting piece of Maine history. I was more interested in the house though, and not as much in the Mast Trade. Though I do understand the significance of the mast trade to the history of the house and area, I feel that this could be shortened/left out of the tour. Our guide was a very lovely and knowledgeable lady, who I could speak with on the history of houses all day.

I booked the Tate House tour and our guide was very knowledgeable, answered everyone’s questions and knew lots of history about the house and the way of life during that time. Educational for sure!

We had an excellent experience at the Tate House because Stephen, our tour guide, was so knowledgeable of the history, engaged in his work, and a pleasant person. We also lucked out and had a private tour with him (on a Saturday, no less). Were you to find yourself in a small group though, you'd have just as good an experience, provided you're interested in history. It is a fun and fascinating step back in time and another nice piece of New England (slash American) history. It's definitely something you should do in Portland.
