The small museum housed actual old railroad cars you could go in. There were play trains for kids to climb in and wooden train sets for kids to play with(so grown-ups could get a chance to look at the old photos and memorabilia). The train ride was short but traveled along scenic Casco Bay. The day we went they had an actual coal-powered steam engine pulling the train. The conductor looked as old as the engine, but very pleasant.

Tickets get you both a 35 min train ride and entrance into the museum. Good fun for kids and adults alike. Lots of history here and you can't beat the ride, with sweeping views of Casco Bay. A bit hard to find, but trust your GPS. Worth allocating 90 minutes for the ride plus museum time.

This is a great way to see the Eastern Promenade. Very informative about narrow gauge trains in Maine. The museum has cars on display with volunteers available to answer questions.

There is a museum with interesting information about Maine's narrow gauge rails history, and it was nice to had a ride on one of those rail cars. This train ride was Ok... probably kids will enjoy it..
The ticket costs $10.00 for a 40 minutes ride. Rides operate every hour. Honestly, there is not too much to see, besides the harbor view, but it was nice to enjoy fresh air and relax. The staff warned us to take a seat at the side of the train facing the ocean to have a nice view during the ride... It stops and allow to take pictures and learn about the burned bridge, etc.
It is easy to walk from the cruise ship, if you have some extra time available, this could be a nice way to spend it, especially for kids.

We spent a Mon-Fri weekend in Portland & would recommend the RR ride/museum. The gentlemen running the train were informative, friendly & enthusiastic about their volunteer jobs. We learned about the history of the narrow gauge, the equipment, and general Portland history. It is a short ride, take your time and read the exhibits in the museum. Permit your imagination to take you back to summers in the 1800s, enjoy the fresh air, and relax like a tourist should!
