“Professional, Worth Trying”
Reviewed September 16, 2012

I had originally written a fairly poor review of this hotel based on a recent night's stay to celebrate an anniversary, but I am amending my initial commentary. We had problems with rude front desk staff and some room quality issues, but while those issues were real, the hotel management has since reached out to us and done everything right to try to address these issues. This included bringing in outside resources to address one of the problems. A leisure industry business like a hotel survives on reputation and the management proved to us they took our complaints seriously, so I am upgrading my view of this hotel exactly because they listened. As I mentioned in my original review, despite our experiences with the front desk staff other hotel employees, including the housekeepers, were very friendly and professional, and a few went out of their way to assist us. My wife tried their breakfast offerings and found the layout standard but good. The room -- one of the large corner suites with the bay windows -- was spacious and comfortable. The location is admittedly a mixed bag; on the down side, it is in an industrial neighborhood (impacting the view), but on the plus side it is only a block from the harbor -- indeed, from the visitor's center, which has lots of tourist information and which public transportation frequents -- and a harbor-side park, and is also 10 minutes walk from all the downtown attractions. Portland is an old fishing and industrial port that is in the midst of transforming into a tourist- and art-oriented resort town, so you can't really blame the hotel for its neighborhood. All in all, I'm going to try this hotel again.

Room Tip: If I had to praise one element of the rooms, it was the fairly complete kitchenettes. Portland has a...

My family and I recently spent two nights in Portland at the Residence Inn. It's a decent place to stay in the waterfront area. The room was clean and up to date. The location could be better, but it's not a long walk to the shops and restaurants that make downtown Portlnd so attractive. Our 4 and 5 year old children had no problem with the walks to and from the hotel. (For those traveling with such young children, there is a narrow gauge train muserevealing includes a short rain ride very nearby the hotel.). The "complimentary" breakfasts were quite sufficient, and the bar in the hotel provided a nice place to relax and enjoy a drink before heading out for dinner. The views from the hotel, particularly those "overlooking" the harbor, are not ideal, but by and large it's location is pretty good. The pricing was a little disappointing, as the nightly rate increased about 40% from Thursday to Friday. (I get the supply and demand thing, but it seemed a bit much, particularly when the hotel charges for parking as well.). Finally, the pool was a nice amenity for our children, and the workout facility was top notch.

As usual, marketing departments use a play on words. This was billed as "in the Old Port area"! "Walking distance to everything!" Well, not exactly. The hotel is located at the far east end of the Old Port area. Walking distance, yes, but not if you have bad knees or a some other condition. In all fairness to the hotel, they do have a shuttle that runs until 9:45 at night. They will take you anywhere and pick you up whenever your call. The drivers are very knowledgable and very courteous. It was a BIG perk for us!! All the hotel staff was very helpful in finding where to eat, where to go, etc. Upon arrival we found the room not exactly what we wanted - no view except a brick wall. We were immediately given another room, still not much better view, but acceptable. (The online pictures show water views!) The rooms were very nice, plenty of room and clean. The complimentary hot/cold breakfast was a plus, since we would have to walk a distance or shuttle to a cafe.

Room Tip: Check out the view before reserving!

As usual a great Marriott Hotel. Close to all the sites in Portland. Nice and clean. This is a Residence Inn so there aer more amentities for families. There is a manager's special 3 nights a week which will more than cover a families dinner especially for the kids.
Very accessable to downtown but far enough away so you won't get the late leaving bars.

Great Staff and rooms were very nice. Walking distance to the Old Port area of town. One of the nicest hotels in the downtown Portland area. Nice breakfast and bar area. This is my place when staying in Portland.

There was so much written in the previous reviews that held true for our stay in this very good hotel. It is located just a few blocks away from Old Port, not even a five minute walk. Old Port did seem to be the place to be in Portland, near the water with a large number of restaurants, bars and shops. The hotel lobby was spacious, modern and clean (though really not upscale). There was a small bar (with limited hours but very good drinks). The bar had a lounge type area with a good number of chairs and tables. The bar serves Shipyard beer which is brewed a block away! The free breakfast was ok. This area was very crowded in the morning. There was also an outside area with a fire pit that looked like a nice place to hangout.
The service from the front desk staff and concierge was wonderful.
Our room was a studio suite which was very roomy for my husband and me. The room was clean and modern but also not fancy or upscale. It contained a king sized bed, a large flat screen TV, a big desk and a lounge type sofa. There is also a small kitrchen with a full sized refrigerator. The bathroom was really just an ordinary hotel bathroom. We had a nice view of the harbor.
As others have stated, the hotel is very pricey for what you get but we had a very pleasant stay.

Room Tip: A harbor view room is nice.

This was our first time staying at this hotel, and we had very high hopes based on the reviews. In many ways, the hotel did not disappoint. Our one-bedroom suite was beautiful, we loved the breakfast, and the facilities (pool, hot tub, spa) were great. Unfortunately, our experience at check in was less than satisfactory. We arrived ten minutes before 3 pm (which is check in time) and were told the room was not ready but it would be ready in around 20-30 minutes. We decided to run to the drugstore to pick up a few things and returned at 3:15. We were told the room was still not ready but would be ready within 15 minutes. At 3:30, I asked again and was told that the room should be ready soon. We were also offered either an accessible suite on the first floor or an upgrade from our one-bedroom suite to a studio suite with a water view, which didn't seem like much of an upgrade. We declined both, because we needed a tub for our kids and we wanted the separation of a one-bedroom unit. Finally, at 3:45 we were told our room was ready. All told, we spent nearly an hour waiting for our room (though only 45 minutes after the room was supposed to be ready). We spent half an hour in the lobby with two young kids who were anxious to get to the beach, all because we kept getting told that the room would be ready soon. The most disappointing part was the attitude of the person at the front desk. He acted as if we were a nuisance, and he didn't seem sorry at all that the room wasn't ready. It's a shame. I thought the hotel itself was great, and some of the staff were terrific (including the parking valet, who actually helped entertain our young kids when we were waiting in the lobby!), but we will likely not be returning.
