Owner description: Whether climbing a mountain, entering a bear's den, role-playing crewmembers on a 40-foot schooner or manning a space shuttle, children will have a blast at this highly interactive museum. Most of the museum is geared to children aged one to 11, but young teens will like the computer lab and the camera exhibits. There's also a play area just for toddlers.

“Excellent Place for Children to Learn and Have Fun”
Reviewed May 13, 2014

I have taken children there several times. They always have a great deal of fun and learn new things. It is one of the best children's museums in the United States.

“Great place to visit with young children”

Brought our 18 month old while visiting Portland. He loved it! Other reviews are accurate. What other Children's Museums should aspire to.

“Great place to take a busy little boy ”
Reviewed April 15, 2014 via mobile

This place is great and south fun for my 2 year old son. The first trip there I bought a membership after seeing how much fun my son was having. We will be back many more times, the staff is very nice and they keep the establishment clean and tidy.

“Must visit”
Reviewed March 11, 2014 via mobile

This place was interactive and educational for children. You can dress up and ride in a giant fire truck, milk a cow, fish in a stream, and just climb and jump on everything.

“A must visit for kids in Portland! Great experience and hands on!”
Reviewed February 15, 2014

Visited here on a Friday while in Portland which was probably a good time to try this out since I bet it gets quite crowded on weekends. The location is smack in the middle up above Old Port housed in which looks like an old bank building. Parking here is a bit strange since you either have to park at a 2 hour meter or one of the parking garages down the street ($1.75 an hour). Entering, you pay admission ($9.00 for adults) greeted by very friendly staff. There is a small theater downstairs which at various times has kids shows for an additional cost. The good thing about this museum different than other Children's Museums (Boston/Providence), pretty much everything is hands on and role play/real life meaning most of this place is geared toward 2-5 year olds, everything from Whale boat, fire truck, mechanics, grocery store, farm and engineer lab. Plus plenty of places to climb, crawl and play. The problem I have with other Children's Museums, they try too hard to educate and forget all kids want to do is play and play and play more. This museum does a very good job of just letting kids play like the space shuttle exhibit or the LL Bean sponsored water fall, camping exhibit. The museum is two full floors and there is even a small area for toddlers to roam and play on pads etc. My kids loved it and they had a blast crawling around and touching and playing. In reality this is how a Children's Museum should be set up. They even have a new ball area with balls to throw around and stuff in tubes and roll down hills. The other nice part of this place, the adults can take part in the play and everything is hands on and with the strong sponsors this place has like Whole Foods and LL Bean, everything was newer and clean. Hopefully this place is getting the support it needs to stay open and keep operating.
