Owner description: In the 1800s, Captain Moody used this observatory to monitor the routes of ships as far as 30 miles away. Today visitors can tour a museum focusing on the history of the watch tower and get a stunning bird's-eye view of Portland and the harbor.

We've been to town many times but never seem to have been there in the season that this spot is open. So glad to have been able to get there this trip. Really fantastic and informative tour. Highly recommend this on any trip to Portland. The views - and the history - can't be beat.

Built in 1807 the Observatory has survived time, fire and urbanization. The tour was a little overpriced but you get a good taste of Portland history and the milieu in which the city developed.

This is just a great piece of old history on a hill in Portland Maine. The docents do a great job of giving you the history of the observatory, it's purpose and a great explanation of how a shipbuilder used his talents to build out of wood. This is a history lover's delight and the view from the top is spectacular. Bring your good camera!

The guide told you the interesting history - why and how it was built, who built it..... In a clear day, one can see the Portland Headlight.
