There were no special exhibits while we were there but the Winslow Homer paintings are always a favorite. It's not big but it is a nice stop when you are in the area

Well worth the trip, just a two hour drive from Boston to see a great smaller museum with an excellent collection, especially if you are a fan of WInslow Homer. Surprisingly good feature show at the time we where there, the Piece Work exhibit is nicely curated. Great collection of contemporary art including some artists I was not familiar with such as Maurice de Vlaminck whose colorful fauve paintings are really beautiful. Make sure to visit the attached and nicely restored older house at the back of the museum. Great interactive exhibits on the restoration of the flying staircase, oilcloth floors, etc. A great museum in a bustling and colorful city. Who knew Portland Me was so hip?

In Portland on a weekend getaway, my wife and I visited the museum to kill a couple of hours Saturday afternoon, and found an excellent collection. U. S. Grant is my favorite American, and the statue of him has the saddest eyes.

Though the current Biennial Exhibit: Piece Work is not a favorite of mine, there are a few pieces with which I do connect: A giant black box of delicately hand crafted, intricate black paper flowers - I can't tell you why I love it - I just do; the clothing items woven from strips of love notes; the back lit styrofoam cooler pieces arranged in a wall sized pattern. There is also plenty to visit and revisit in the rest of the Museum, including exquisite impressionist paintings, Winslow Homer's Weatherbeaten, John Singer Sargent portraits, the beautifully restored Federal-era McLellan House and its current magical bell installation. Also not to miss, the hands on room where budding artists of all ages can try their hand at using shapes to plan architectural 3D art - check out the fanciful cardboard wall covering in this room. It's easy to drop in for a visit whenever we're in town and not feel overwhelmed.

I spent a great afternoon wandering around this small museum with it's grand display of Wyeth's and Homers. It will not disappoint.
