We noticed the museum as it is across the street from the Holiday Inn By the Bay. We spent an enjoyable and interesting two hours waiting for the shuttle to the airport. The Winslow Homer exhibits are very well presented and we were surprised at the quality of the impressionists on display.

The deepness of the collection is quite astonishing for a small city like Portland. One can find almost any kind of modern art in the museum (from end of 19th century to beginning of 21st) and even older art works. There are also some quite known artists in the collection, including e.g. Picasso and Magritte. The size of the museum is just right, one can manage it in a couple of hours.

I was in Portland a day before my bike trip was to begin, basically killing time. I decided to have a look at the Portland Art Museum and wow, was I glad that I did! Beautiful collection, special exhibits were fantastic and the house attached to the museum is a fine example of a early 1800s prominent family home.

Make sure you make time for this excellent art collection!

We were pleasantly surprised to find major works of art in this Maine city . Four floors of famous artists and sculptors, with special exhibits for a very reasonable price . Well stocked gift shop for purchasing books, etc
