Owner description: With an extensive permanent collection and nationally renowned exhibitions, the Portland Museum of Art is rightfully taking its place as the best regional museum in the country. The PMA boasts a considerable permanent collection, with beloved works of American, European, and Contemporary art, as well as significant holdings of Maine art-highlighting the rich artistic tradition of the state and its artists. The museum brings it all to life with unparalleled programming. From special member-only events, free school tours, and a commitment to family activities, to PMA Movies, curator talks, and exclusive tours of the Winslow Homer Studio-it's all happening at the PMA.

Staff was friendly and helpful, giving descriptions of galleries and how best to view. It's a small museum, so it's easy to see all you want to see. I like Impressionist painters and they had a nice collection, including Monet, some Toulouse Lautrec posters, and some lesser known that I really enjoyed. The museum includes an old house (the actual house!) that has been redone in styles of the period; very interesting. But the best of the house was the "floating staircase"--worth seeing!

The building and the art on display are well worth several visits a year. The permanent art collection is impressive for a small city and the special exhibits are well planned and show-cased. I love to spend time here and will revisit the permanent sites to rethink ideas and enjoy the new displays as well.

The Portland Museum of Art was a welcome site of culture for our few days stay in the area. We enjoyed the regional emphasis.

First time to visit the Museum. The staff was friendly and the Paley Exhibit was wonderful. The exhibit was well curated and provided insight into his large and small impressionist and modern paintings

I didn't have to travel from NYC to see a MoMA collection on tour, but the special African art exhibit and Maine art was worth the trip.
