Even though we are members, we always seem to end up there on Friday evenings. Featured exhibits are always good and my husband loves the impressionist paintings in the permanent collection. The far upstairs hall usually has something interesting and unusual. Foreign and unusual films show on weekends, and are often very good. We haven't done the new Homer Studio tour in Black Point yet, but expect to go in June.

An especially impressive collection of late 19th and early 20th century paintings, including those of famous European impressionists. Also other periods and types of art, so something for everyone. Very worthwhile. Probably the finest cultural attraction in the area. Many good places to eat and public pay lots nearby in this downtown neighborhood.

The Portland Museum of Art is a gem! Not only do they have a nice collection of European masters (Picasso, for example), but the real beauty of the museum is the collection of American masterpieces. They have some beautiful works by Winslow Homer, the Wyeths, etc. In addition to a great permanent exhibit, they also have rotating exhibits. The must-see - if you are lucky enough to purchase tickets online as soon as they are available - is the Winslow Homer studio about 20 minutes from downtown in Prout's Neck area of Scarborough. You purchase your tickets and start out at the museum in Portland. For the price of your ticket, you'll get an overview at the museum, transportation to the studio, and a guided tour of Homer's studio. Tours are offered spring, summer and fall, but numbers are limited. This is definitely worth a visit and the little cafe in the basement of the main museum has some nice offerings for a quick bite.

Donors have been generous to Portland as evidenced by the superb collections at the art museum, which exceed the depth, quality and scope that one might expect in a city Portland's size.

We have seen many special exhibitions there and we return for the solace of the permanent collection. Winslow Homer and three generations of Wyeths keep pulling us back along with modern European masters. Works of Maine artists are also a draw.

A visit to Homer's studio at Prout's Neck is a rare experience. Reserve a spot!

As I first time visitor to this museum I was very impressed with the collection of art, statues, and furniture. The museum is also attached to a period home next door that visitors can explore. An elevator and a a cafeteria are available for patrons. The admission fee for seniors ($10.00) is very reasonable. This is a well-managed, clean museum with many interesting objects of art worth viewing. I strongly recommend art lovers visit here should they be in town.
