“Lovely small museum”

It is a nicely styled and spacious small museum with a variety of paintings and sculpture. The exhibits change frequently so it always seems fresh when you visit. It has a great space for children's activities. It is a 10 to 15 minute walk from the Old Port. There is a cafe on the lower level. The pastries are excellent. The lunches are somewhat pricey.

“A Gem of a Small Museum”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

The Portland Museum of Art is a perfect small-city collection, with a modest collection of works in a handsome building, with excellent temporary exhibitions, and the bonus of an elegant 180 mansion attached.

The current show, of painter Lois Dodd, was a revelation to me of this little-heralded artist. She spent summers in Maine and winters in NYC, along with a circle of other influential folks like Alex Katz. The show included works from both locations, as well as her plein-art works in New Jersey, where she also spent time.

Like the museum itself, the show was enlightening, not a blockbuster, but handsomely done. Their permanent collection has some well-known names and a masterwork or two, mostly collected by Joan Payson Whitney. But there are wonderful works by lesser-known artists, many of them Maine-based.

And the McLellan Mansion is a treasure, a huge house for 1801, with an elegant central hall complete with a fabulous flying staircase. Many of its rooms have been restored to their 1801 opulence, with rich colors, bold wallpapers, and ornately carved wooden and plaster mouldings.

A perfect morning visit, with a petite but serviceable cafe for a quiche and caffeine to keep one going.

“A Gem in Portland”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

We visited the PMA while on a day trip to Portland. We were pleasantly surprised. The museum is not huge, but the quality of art represented is very impressive. It was of a perfect size so that we didn't feel rushed. And we still had plenty of time for enjoying the Old Port area. I would highly recommend a visit to any art lover who will be in the area.

“Museum”
Reviewed April 7, 2013

The museum had some really great works and the people at the front desk were very helpful in explaining where everything was located and how to best approach such a large museum. We spent about an hour and a half looking at the exhibits and that was fairly quick (we were trying to fit a lot into our day), there really was a lot of pieces in the museum.
