“Hermit Island Campground”
Reviewed June 21, 2014

What a great place to camp,I don't mean in a wheeled resort, but real camping. The place is just beautiful. The rule is listen to music on headphones makes it great for other campers. This is a place to enjoy nature. The camp store is well stocked and staff is very friendly and helpful. The toilets are kept clean. The campground doesn't need any upgrades, that could spoil the way an lsland on the Maine coast should look and be. It is most likely to be more quiet in the off season, when we went (mid June) Hermit Island is one of our best camping places we have been.

“Best enjoyed out of season”
Reviewed June 12, 2014

By going to the campground in late May, before the regular season, we avoided the crowds and had our pick of beautiful sites. Camping here is basic--no electricity, many bathrooms are without running water, no cell-phone signal (for us, anyway). They don't take anything but cash in the pre-season. The roads are really bad, but once you get settled in, you forget all the hassle and it really is wonderful. There is a lot of land to wander. They have many well-marked trails through the woods. There are several beaches. Many campsites are quite private.

“An excellent *CAMP*ground”
Reviewed January 1, 2014

If you expect amazing staff maitenance and supreme conditions, camping isn't for you...part of the beauty of Hermit Island is living WITHOUT all of the comforts of a hotel. My family has been camping at Hermit Island for over 45 years, and we love savor every spartan moment that we spend there.

“Nice Location”
Reviewed September 16, 2013

We recently stayed at the Hermit's Island campground. I've done a lot of camping and found this location and scenery to be first rate. The maintenance of the campground however, not so much. Perhaps I am spoiled, I tend to stay in very clean, well maintained facilities. The folks at Hermit's Island charge a lot of money for their location and provide very little else for the money. The sites themselves vary in size and condition, ours was totally exposed to the weather, and although at the top of a hill, didn't drain water very fast. It was a challenge finding enough flat ground to place a six man tent. The plus side of course was the view, it was gorgeous I won't take that away from the place. Bathrooms are also a bit hit or miss. The pit toilets were clean but at the end of the season they aren't cleaning them regularly and they are a bit rough to use. The showers are also a little rough. They are all on very brief timers and the shower itself didn't drain quick enough so we ended up standing in a pool of dirty water. Not ideal at $35.00 dollars a night, in season it's double that. As hosts I just feel that as long as people tolerate and accept this, these owners will continue to provide minimal services. It's really kind of embarrassing. Would I go back, yeah probably, but I might look for somewhere else too. It does have a nice location thought and the walking trails around the island are fun. It's just frustrating to me when I go to Vermont and find nice facilities and come here and find this.

“Our favorite campground”
Reviewed September 9, 2013

My family loves coming here, its one of the highlights of our summer, we look forward to it every summer. Our first visit was in 2010, we loved it so much we returned later that summer and at least once every year since then. We camp in tents and absolutely love the peaceful, quiet, natural setting. We've stayed at 26, 28, 30 and 31 Harbor Grove as well as 44 Dune Way. We liked staying close to the beach at the dune campsite and the campsite was relatively private and secluded. However, it was very sandy and a little challenging to set up a tent. The harbor Grove sites are more wooded and right on the harbor. Before making a reservation, check the unofficial guide for lots of detailed photos.

We have a small 12 foot wooden sailboat that is perfect for launching from their boat ramp or dune beach.
