Review of Hermit Island

While I can't speak for how crowded it may be during high season, Hermit Island was perfect in May! Campsites are semi-secluded so that everyone has their privacy. The camp store is well-stocked, bigger animals are not a concern, and the bathrooms were all clean.

We hiked the Red trail along the ocean-front and enjoyed incredible view. There are also variety of beaches to choose from. Come well-prepared with bug spray though, on both the beaches and in the woods.

We spent the weekend with adult friends, but is a fantastic location for family camping.

Five gorgeous sandy beaches. Many scenic hiking trails. Bike friendly. Kayaking galore. Private campsites. Ocean prime or even in the woods, definitely worth it! Store with groceries, band aids, beer and wine. Ping pong and volleyball. Ticks and mosquitoes. Expensive. Beautiful. Deer running around. Cold swimming but fun! Very children friendly. Almost no cell phone reception. Always much fun!! Been there 20+ times and will be again soon :)

The campsites on the ocean are spectacular. The hiking is equally so.

I went with my brother and his family (two kids ages 9 and 11) - we each had different sites, a little ways away from each other but easy walking distance. Both our sites were "choice" sites and though we would have loved prime or ocean prime, that just didn't happen. Having said that, our sites were great and we went to sleep at night lulled by the sounds of the ocean. The campground and its facilities were very clean and well-kept, and the staff were all friendly and helpful. The beaches are several, beautiful, and though the campground was always full while we were there, the beaches were not crowded. And, the quiet hours were actually observed here! It was peaceful at night, and the people I met there who were camping were there to actually camp, not to party. And this really is a campground for campers - as the other reviewer said, there are rare planned activities, no pool or playground. There are a few things to do in the area (Fort Popham and Popham Beach State Park to name a couple). I'm already planning another trip there this summer, hoping I can score an ocean prime site!
