This Inn has everything you need to enjoy a Maine coastal experience. The style of the Inn itself is lovely with its authentic New England interior. The setting is gorgeous, a sprawling lawn on the Kennebec River. With binoculars you can see seals basking in the sun. It is a pleasure to enjoy the house and the site but there are also nearby beaches, a maritime musuem, downtown Bath and other coastal exploration. Most importantly, the owners are welcoming, hospitable, considerate and fun to talk to.

I was over from London visiting my sister who lives in Boston for Thanksgiving. We'd decided to visit Maine for a few days and came across the 1774 Inn on the Guardian website. Arriving in the rain, we didn't see the view that the others have raved about but we had a warm welcome from John and enjoyed reading in front of a log fire in the beautifully decorated sitting room, before braving the weather in search of the best pizza in Maine at the Cabin in Bath.

We stayed in the Minott room and the bed was one of the most comfortable I've ever slept in. Breakfast was delicious too. We stayed two nights and I got to eat the fresh lobster Maine is renowned for at the Kennebec Tavern in Bath on our second night.

We woke on our final morning to calm skies and clear views across the river. We wished we could have stayed longer. I think my sister plans to take our mum to the 1774 Inn when she visits next year. She's already looking forward to it!

We were given a lovely friendly welcome by John the Inn keeper on our arrival, with a cup of hot tea and some freshly made strawberry bread. The building itself it very old and full of character, with fine views over the Kennebec river. The place was quite quiet in October, but the beach at Popham was excellent for taking photographs. Not much in the way of restaurants locally this time of year, but Bath (some 8 Miles away) was very interesting for an industrial town. The food at the 1774 was very good and the dining room was a great setting for breakfast. Would love to return, perhaps in May/June

What a wonderful place to stay! John & Jackie catered for our every need, as if we were friends rather than paying guests. The house has been beautifully refurbished (we enjoyed a tour, including the cellar!) and it was inspiring to see the new wallpapers and fabrics Jackie had expertly chosen. A comfortable bed, ensuite shower room and soft fluffy towels made us feel instantly at home. The view from the house is breathtaking – a peaceful haven. We enjoyed a walk along Popham Beach and returned to Spinney's in the evening, for lobster. A delicious breakfast welcomed us in the morning – granola, fresh fruit, yoghurt, breads and the most delicious 'strata' meant we were well set up for the day ahead. Sitting on the deck in the sunshine, coffee in hand, watching seals wallow in the Kennebec River was an added bonus. We only wish we could have stayed longer!

We just stayed at the 1774 Inn over the weekend, as we attended a wedding in Phippsburg on Saturday night.

We have two teenage children, one of whom is a vegetarian. John arranged for a special vegetarian breakfast for our son, which we appreciated very much. The beds were very comfortable and the Inn and its location were wonderful.

Only the John half of the hosting team was present over the weekend, but he could not have been more delightful or accommodating.

We stayed in the three rooms on the second floor, looking directly at the beautiful scenery; we had a small private bath (shower) and our children shared a slightly large bath (shower). The shampoos and soaps they provided were lovely, and John was kind enough to loan me his wife's hairdryer.

Overall, we had an excellent stay, and I have only very positive things to say about the Inn. I would highly recommend the 1774 Inn!

I rarely give five stars (or I guess it's circles on TripAdvisor), but our stay was as close to perfect as you can get. The Inn was recently renovated and the owners, John and Jackie, have done a fantastic job. Rooms are beautiful, beds are very comfortable, and there's a ton of indoor and outdoor common space. John and his staff were so nice (Jackie was out of town, but sounds like she's great too) and we and our friends instantly felt at home. It's well worth the price, which is very much on par with other places in the area that aren't nearly as beautiful, comprehensive, or welcoming.

I added a photo from first thing in the morning. I got up, grabbed some coffee and homemade granola with yogurt and fresh fruit and went and sat on the deck overlooking the river. Such a great way to start the day.

A little hint - when you call to book, don't be put off by how laid-back they are about the reservations. I don't think they asked for any money up-front to confirm or anything. Being 'city-folk', we found this a little scary, but they are on the ball. Don't worry!

There's a lot to do in the area, too, if you like the outdoors - go down to Popham Beach and take a walk, visit Fort Popham, grab lunch or dinner at Spinney's, hike one of the many trails, bring a bike and tackle the windy, hilly Parker Hill Road, or pop into Bath if you want a little more (but not too much) action.

We'll go back for sure. Would love to visit in another season.

My Wife, infant son and I had the pleasure of staying at the Inn while visiting family nearby. The new owners, John and Jackie, were superb hosts who catered to our every need. The views of the Kennebec River and prime location between Bath and the Phippsburg beaches made this a fantastic getaway. Breakfast each morning was prepared perfectly and served with pride and care. The Inn's decor was comforting and inviting, welcoming us to explore every nook and cranny. We can't wait to get back for another visit!
