“Rest and relaxation in a secluded setting”

Returned last weekend from a fortnight at Captain's Cabin. We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday and found the property spacious, comfortable and clean. The gardens, especially the swimming pool were the real highlight and where we spent most time, relaxing and enjoying the sun (and local wine!) while the kids played in the pool. Had a nice homely feel with comfortable beds, plenty of storage space in bedrooms and room for all the clutter that comes with holidaying with small children. Bathroom had shower, sink and toilet and there was a separate toilet next to the back door. The kitchen and utility room were well equipped (including breakfast table) and there was plenty of clean linen. The village of Bourgnac is very small, mainly wooded with farmland and fields - very tranquil and green. The villa itself is set in a quiet road which is reached via a fairly steep road/track uphill, so a car is essential with children. Well worth venturing out to surrounding towns, attractions and markets which were all really enjoyable, plus loads of photo opportunities with the beautiful scenery. Nearest main town for essentials (supermarket, boulangerie, pharmacy etc) is Mussidan which is a few minutes drive or a 15 minute cycle (bikes provided at the villa). Nearest beach is approx 90 minute drive, however there is a gorgeous inland lake with beach, children's play park and free use of kayaks called Le Grand Etang de la Jemaye approx 25 minutes away. We spent a few days out here and would highly recommend - two cafe's with good food and ice creams/coffees etc and also a main restaurant. There's a local info folder at the property with ideas for days out, markets, maps of the region, restaurant recommendations etc, which were all really useful. Bergerac is great for dining out and general sightseeing - loved the old part of town with narrow lanes and old beamed buildings leading down to the river. Overall, we found the Captain's Cabin is a great base for exploring the region and also gives you the privacy and peaceful surroundings to really get away from it all and completely relax. We spent most of our time here and made the most of the outdoor facilities, bbq and pool and just enjoyed not having to do anything! If you're looking for a traditional setting geared towards outdoor living in this area, then this is the place. Highly recommend.

Great place to stay. Plenty of room, comfortable and clean. Large living room facing out to patio area with good size pool, perfect for the hot weather. Nice gardens. Ideal base for exploring the region. Restaurants in the local town very good, especially Relais de Gabillou. Bergerac definitely worth a visit, also the lake with sandy beach at le Grand Etang - very nice spot for swimming and canoeing. Looking forward to our next visit to the Captains Cabin.

Thanks Cliff for your lovely comments. You are welcome to return anytime. Jerome the Chef and owner of Relais de Gabilou is quite a character and fluent in English. Our favourite restaurant!

Captains Cabin is a lovely property in a quiet setting. The pool is a excellent. The property has everything you could look for. It is not five star luxury, but its homely and the owners are very welcoming and do everything they can to make your stay enjoyable. Plenty of games, books and a pool table all provided.
Area is very quiet. Nearest town has all the basics requirements and a couple of supermarkets. You definitely need a car to get to any of the attractions.
Canoeing down the river was a highlight for our family.

What a wonderful place the pictures although nice do not do the cabin justice if you are looking for a place to stay that is quiet and extremely comfortable the cabin is for you.
The homeliness of the decor to the finishing hotel touches have been very thoughtfully managed you have the feeling of being a special comfortable guest in someone's home
My husband and I loved watching the stars while lying in the hammock late into the night
Mussidan itself is a lovely village with very welcoming locals from the greengrocers in the square the bakers by the church and the wonderful waitress who translated the menu with the help of a dictionary

“lovely peaceful getaway”
Reviewed August 26, 2014 for a stay in October 2013

Mum and I took the kids (10 & 12) for a short 5 day break. We went to several villages/towns for shopping & sightseeing and had some fabulous lunches out. We watched DVDs with the log fire in the evenings. It was too cold for the pool, but we played snooker, went for bike rides and a walk. One of our favorite trips was to the lake - it would be perfect with its sandy beach on a summers day.

“A lovely get-away-from-it-all place - great pool!”

We spent a week at 'Captains Cabin' with our three teenage daughters. The outside area was great, the pool was clean and there was plenty of room for sun loungers and outside dining. We spent a day at 'Le Grand Etang' (a lake about 40 minutes drive away) which had a lovely beach and a fab choice of food to buy. Bordeaux was only an hour away and we took advantage of the park and ride scheme - the city was very busy and was a contrast to the relaxing area of Bourgnac.

We all relaxed the moment we walked through the door. The house was very comfortable and the rooms were cool and clean. There was plenty of space for the children to play in and many fun things to do, including swimming in the large pool, and even playing pool. The young children especially enjoyed walking through the small woods at the bottom of the garden area. We adults spent the evenings together outside by the pool area enjoying the peace and quiet after many a full day. Although there were bikes we never took the opportunity to go for a ride but the local area had some beautiful places to explore on a bike. Not too far to drive for local amenities.
