We arrived at the Royal Anchor Resort in OOB on a rainy day in May as part of our 2 week tour of New England from the UK with our 8 year old son. Check-in was efficient and the price good. We also took advantage of their guest laundry room which was a boon at the halfway stage in our trip.

It is a motel style place with external walkways to rooms on 3 floors. We were in a newly refurbished room on the top floor which was comfortable, but loses a star for the tiniest bathroom of the trip! As with most rooms, ours was side on to the sea, but as the weather cleared we had lovely evening views over the bay from the balcony and the hotel's beach is lovely and sandy - easy to see why it is such a draw in summer.

The place feels just a little quirky - even at low season with only a handful of guests, you are still expected to park in the numbered place corresponding to your room number. Rules is rules!

OOB itself looks like a lively resort in season, not unlike the old British seaside towns with the same mixture of tat and tackiness, but quite endearing in spite of that. We stumbled upon a really good toy store called "Board Silly" in the town centre which had all sorts of games which made great treats for our son. The people there (Ken and Missy) are great as purveyors of unofficial tourist information including dinner recommendations.

On their advice, we ate at Ken's Place, a lively seafood self-service restaurant a short drive from the hotel. It was fantastic, a great family atmosphere with lively banter at the bar, nice local beer and fantastic fresh seafood. Just about our favourite meal of the trip but we probably would never have even gone in such a local place without knowing about it in advance.

The continental breakfast at the RAR was well-stocked and serviced by a friendly member of staff, though the small breakfast room must get pretty crowded out when the hotel is full.

Maine made a real impression on us and we were sorry to leave. The Royal Anchor Resort is a nice place to stay, and Ken's Place unmissable.

Very quiet and relaxing place. Perfect end of the beach away from all the busyness. Very clean place with big private balconies on the 2nd and 3rd floors. Overlooks the pool and the ocean. Not too bad of a price and would recommend to anyone.

We've been going to the Royal Anchor for years and we keep going back. It's a fabulous place; immaculately clean and friendly efficient staff . They serve a nice breakfast each day. This year they have refurbished some of their best rooms. All new (very high end) bedding and mattresses. Bathroom vanity with marble top....it looks very classy and is so comfortable. We strongly recommend the Royal Anchor.

We don't stay anywhere else when we visit Old Orchard Beach. This hotel has it all. Friendly staff, clean rooms, great breakfast right on site - and the view!! I can't wait for August so we can go back.

This happened to be one of the first beachfront motels we came upon driving from the north as we took a scenic detour on our way from Quebec to Boston. We did not realize just how many motels and B & Bs the town has. On a weeknight in early October, the place was quiet, so we cannot judge what it would be like during the summer season. The room was large and comfortable, and with an AARP rate of under $80 the price was certainly good. We occasionally heard trains on the nearby tracks but they did not bother us (and the factor would be the same for most anyplace in the town). I think it is a bit of a stretch to call the breakfast a "deluxe continental breakfast," but it was fine. There were few places for dinner so we drove a few miles back on Hwy. 9 to a local place where one orders lobster, grilled fish, etc. at windows (very good; the motel clerk can tell you about it). The beach is quite nice for long walks, especially at low tide.
