I travelled here with my family (including 2 small children) and stayed for 3 nights. We stayed in a large ground floor apartment. We got off to bad start when we arrived because our apartment was freezing cold and every time we plugged in the space heaters the power would go out to our room. As you can imagine this was frustrating with a freezing cold family. Would not be an issue in the summer obviously... we had very cold weather in the off season.

The apartment was far from luxury but was very clean and comfortable and we were pleased with it once we got over the initial issue. For the most part the staff was extremely friendly which really added to the charm of the place. The apartment included a full kitchen and a small dining area which was nice for fixing simple meals when we didn't feel like going out.

We very much enjoyed our breakfasts at the attached restaurant and the waitresses were very sweet and kind to our two young children. They made us feel like we had been going to the place for years.

Pros:
-My kids enjoyed being so close the beach and the indoor pool.
-Close to everything
-Friendly staff
-Very clean

Cons:
-Cold in the off season (May)
-The beds were really hard

From the running toilet, wet rug, heatless bathroom to the very run down atmosphere, I had a hard time relaxing on this vacation. The positive is that the cleaning staff is thorough and kind. However when we spoke to the office about the unheated bedroom and bathroom we were handed a space heater (it was 40 degrees...the lack of heating was certainly not in the description nor mentioned when we booked our room), about the semi working toilet, we were handed a plunger and when we told the staff that the "living area" rug was wet about a foot in by the slider, they just mentioned a rain storm earlier in the week and walked away. If we hadn't already paid we would have run screaming as quickly as we could pack up the children. It was creepy in a scary movie sort of way after dark, so we stayed inside.

After a lot of laughs about how rediculous the situation was, we decided that we would concentrate on the positive. It was clean, you can hear the waves and we are blessed to be able to go on vacation when so much of the world can barely afford housing. We will NEVER return. Maine we love, Old Orchard Beach and the Alouette we do not.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else. Perhaps Ogunquit or Wells.

When we first went to Old Orchard we were unhappy with the Hotel we chose, then we found the Alouette, this will be our third year returning to the Alouette.
First of all Fred is very very nice. My emails are always answered right away, that to me is so important when planning my vacation. The rooms are very clean and well attended to during our visit. We love how it is family oriented, not party central. We will continue to return to The Alouette with our daughter and continue to build awesome family memories. Thanks Alouette !!! its the highlight of our summer.

The Alouette is an older beach hotel, right on the beach that I have stayed at for the last five years. The owners also have two other hotels that are very similiar. Every room has an OK view of the beach and ocean from the balcony because they are on an angle. Some rooms are a $10-$30 more expensive and put you right on the beach. I highly reccomend these rooms facing the beach. All the facilities are typical of beach hotels, which a month after being painted, look like they need a paint job. The rooms are outdated, with furniture from the 60's, but everything worked and my family was always quite comfortable there. The carpet could be replaced, but everytime we came back from the beach we tracked in sand no matter how careful we were. But housekeeping always kept it vaccumed up for us. We have stayed in a small room with three adults and two kids and managed just fine (and paid about sixty bucks). The bathrooms are cramped and some of them are ackward to manuver in, because the hotel is wider the farther away from the beach but the basics are there and work. The water pressure is fantastic in the showers, which is nice if you like this. Parking is good, just like a motel. The best part, aside from value is the owners. Fred and his wife are right there for you. They are the nicest people I have ever met at a motel. Fred instructed us how to buy lobsters for four bucks and cook them in our room. We also used one of the gas grills on site to make exellent food and feasted every night on the beach. Rooms as super cheap and no frills. The management is knowlegable and Fred's wife runs a little resteraunt in the front, costing $3-$5 for what I usually pay $8-$10 for. This place is comfy and inexpensive, but the family atmosphere and the best prices on the beach keep me coming back year after year. If you are looking for updated furniture, perfect carpet and fancy things, go pay four times as much down the beach. If you want clean, no frills and great family fun, stay with Fred.

Room Tip: Book oceanfront if you can.

The room was small but adequate and a stone's throw from the beach for great walking and enjoyment of the ocean, which is why we came to Old Orchard Beach. For us Vermonters it's a lot closer than Cape Cod, and fewer people off-season.
We particularly like the fact the Alouette is dog friendly and even people without dogs seem to enjoy others' canine companions, who were all well-behaved as were their owners.
For our dog Jacques, it was a fnd remembrance from the spring visit and he began whining with excitement as soon as wee pulled into the parking lot.
The real bonus was that the cafe there had excellent breakfasts!!! Too hard not to eat too much, but we loved it. Homemade muffins in variety right out of the oven !! Terrific "nest" egg dish. It's also an easy walk to tour the downtown area and see the sights. Lots of good dinner restaurants near by and the whole Maine coast to explore.
Don't miss the trolley museum to the south and the lighthouses to the north. Sally and John Cook, Barnet, Vermont.
