“Nice Inn”
Reviewed July 21, 2006

We just stayed overnight at Hartwell House. We had stayed there three years ago and found it to be clean and the room was a good size. The breakfast was better than expected. There was a breakfast menu with many choices. I think that the management is trying to improve the inn. They emailed asking for suggestions and saying that plans to revitalize Hartwell House will be implimented. The location is good and we enjoyed our stay.

This inn has potential, but is in desperate need of renovation. Rooms, public spaces and grounds look shabby. Not in the same league as many of the other inns listed in the Distinguished Inns of North America guide. Service was perfunctory. Bright spot: breakfast & piano bar at SW Swan Bistro across the street.

Our families and friends all stayed at the Hartwell House for our wedding this fall, and it was a terrific experience for everyone. The rooms were lovely (a fantastic bridal suite!), the breakfasts were fabulous, and the new innkeepers went out of to make our stay special. It's nerve-wracking to choose accomodations for grandmothers, cousins, and parents, but everyone raved about the place.

Some of the above comments have mentioned price. The Hartwell House is definitely more expensive than the B&Bs, motels, and guesthouses in town, and perhaps prices are a bit high, but we found it a much better value than any of the other upscale alternatives, particularly compared to the Cliff House, which we felt had less charm for more money.

For $177 per night, all we got was antique furniture (uncomfortable), bathroom and indifferent breakfast. The only amenities were a clock radio and a telephone for outgoing local calls. The only TV was in a shared sitting room with hard chairs.
Ridiculous price for a bed-and-breakfast.

I am happy to report that the recent visit my husband and I made to the Hartwell House was a total delight. Our two-room suite was freshly painted and spacious and included a shady outside seating area. The breakfast and afternoon tea served daily were delicious as was the Sunday brunch which included champagne for all who wanted it. The staff was extremely pleasant and helpful, particularly in the case of the manager Danette Kerrigan, who did everything possible to make our stay a happy one. Although I am generally ultra-fussy over travel accomodations, I can only say that our visit to Hartwell House was perfect in every way and that my only regret was that our stay was a relatively short one. Next time we intend to make it longer.

Our recent trip to the Hartwell House can be summed up in one word--disappointing. The only bright spot was the Sunday champagne brunch--with no champagne. We stayed in the former Master Suite. There were water stains on the ceiling, chipped paint, no curtains only cheap dime store vinyl shades...etc. The staff were very nice but there was a lack of attention to detail.
