Hartwell House Inn
Ranked #4 of 26 Ogunquit B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed February 8, 2014

What are the chances of finding a perfect inn in a perfect coastal town? Well, we feel like we won the lottery on this one! The Hartwell House in Ogunquit, Maine is the winning ticket.

We visited last September and found the Hartwell House located on a "Norman Rockwell" street. It is an easy walk to Perkins Cove and Marginal Way (one of our favorite walks along the coast, reminding us of Rockport's Garden Path and Newport's Cliff Walk.). The innkeepers, Charlene and Eric, were friendly, knowledgeable, and willing to track down the answer to any question. (They do all this without hovering or inserting themselves into your stay...a great talent.)

My husband and I have visited Ogunquit three other times, but never had as charming and special an experience. We loved the inn's location. We loved the romantic room with all its windows, small but convenient kitchen, and its own entryway. The back yard is peaceful; the front yard a people watchers' haven.

One of our favorite moments and favorite photos is the two of us eating fresh and inexpensive lobster on the outdoor patio. We "caught" it ourselves....by walking right next door to the sweet little lobster take-out place. We didn't take it far at all.....just a dozen steps across the lawn to the H.H. Inn.

Charlene and Eric helped make our anniversary trip a lovely one, and were thoughtful in giving us a cold bottle of champagne to celebrate. Our next will be #24. We'll be back, if not in 2014, then soon.

Thank you for taking a few moments to write such a wonderful TripAdvisor review of The Hartwell House Inn. "What are the chances of finding a perfect inn in a perfect coastal town?" This made us so happy to hear. Charlene and I feel the same way about our "Norman Rockwell street" - so beautiful during any season of the year!

We enjoyed playing a role in helping you celebrate your anniversary in a memorable way, and we look froward to your return! See you soon!

The Hartwell House is a charming inn with surprisingly good sized rooms with modern amenities. It's walking distance to everywhere in Ogunquit - and extremely close to Perkin's Cove. The Inn Keepers are extremely warm and quick to help in any way they can. Even though it's practically next door to an outstanding breakfast place - Amore - it's absolutely worth joining the other guests at the Inn dining room for the free morning breakfast, which is also excellent.

This was our second stay at the Hartwell House and we'll definitely be back.

Room Tip: Lady Pepperell and Dolly Madison are great rooms.

Thanks for bringing back some pleasant memories of summer - and we're thrilled to see that you enjoyed your stay with us at The Hartwell House Inn!

Our central location - just one block from Perkins Cove (and the breathtaking Marginal Way cliff walk), makes our Inn the perfect choice for so many of our guests. They love to just park their cars when they arrive and walk for the rest of their stay!

We look forward to your next visit! See you then!

We decided a little late that we should go away for NYE. Didn't want the bustle of the city. Ogunquit is so beautiful in the winter. We came upon an Inn site and saw the special at Hartwell House. So happy we did. The Inn Keepers made us feel more than welcome. They called the morning after we booked the online reservation and invited us to join them for dinner and a wine reception. The inn itself is comfy, filled with antiques and whimsy. Wine by the fire with some of the other guests. Then a perfect dinner. Close enough to downtown that you can walk if you like but quiet and serene. What a great way to start off 2014.

Room Tip: All the rooms are very different and priced according to the details. We stayed in a basic room. It...

We decided to go north to Ogunquit Maine last minute with no reservations. On our arrival to the area we decided to drive down shore road to see if anything caught our eye. The Hartwell House stood out above anything we had seen on the road. Brightly shining in white lights we pulled over and called. One room left. When we entered we were greeted by the Inn keeper and treated like family. They presented us with two champagne glasses and a bottle of champagne, then they promptly made us reservations to a local restaurant. What a delight to be treated this way on a late cold winters night. To our surprise the next morning we were told a gourmet breakfast was included.
Pumpkin pancakes were too beautiful to eat! I did eat them however. Delicious!! The omelet my husband had was the fluffiest he had ever seen and delicious also.
The other guests at the Inn were extremely friendly! We have definitely found a Gem!! We will definitely be going back!

Back from another FUNTASTIC stay. Three time in less that 6 months and worth every minute of our 8 hour drive to our home away from home. Charlene and Eric are the best inn keepers that we have ever met in all of our B&B experiences and the Hartwell family is extremely lucky to have found such a heart welcoming couple that treats us like family. Will be back again in July (once the snow and cold are gone). Thanks for a perfect break from the rat race.

Room Tip: Our room is the Lady Hamilton. Please leave it like it is...!

We have stayed here many times, four times in 2013, and hope and expect to return again & again. Hartwell House, in Ogunquit, is our favorite "get-away" place; only an hour and a half from home and in the midst of so much sea-side beauty. Most important to us is the restful luxury and the warm welcome Charlene and Eric extend to their guests. Nothing seems difficult for them, and they cook and serve (themselves) absolutely delicious breakfasts with personal attention. We have stayed only one night during a business trip to Portsmouth and for a whole week with various family members meeting us--can't wait for our next visit.

Room Tip: The rooms in the main house are close to breakfast & tea; elegant luxury. The rooms in the anne...

Thank you so much!

If there is one set of guests that future travelers should listen to regarding The Hartwell House Inn - it should be you two! When it comes to the experience of staying at our property -- you are some of the most qualified experts :-)

"They cook and serve (themselves) absolutely delicious breakfasts with personal attention..." - Thanks for pointing this out. As Innkeepers, we make certain to be on property - and interacting with the guests in ways that ensure they are deriving the full benefit of their getaways - as much as possible. We are passionate about our lifestyle as innkeepers, and we're very happy to see that it shows!

"Restful luxury and the warm welcome..." - We couldn't have said it better, ourselves. This is what we aim for - welcoming and unobtrusive...we want our guests to feel as comfortable as they do in their own homes, even when on the scenic coast of Maine!

Always looking forward to our next visit with the both of you (and your family)! See you soon!

Charlene and Eric, the Inn Keepers, made our weekend getaway an exceptional stay! They are two very lovely people and the Hartwell House is beautiful. We had a large, clean room. A scrumptious breakfast (including decadent pumpkin pancakes) was served each morning. Tea and home made snacks were available every afternoon. We highly recommend staying at the Hartwell house if you are heading to Ogunquit!!!

Those pumpkin pancakes sure have gotten a lot of attention! Very happy to hear that you enjoyed them!

As you pointed out, breakfast is something we take very seriously at The Hartwell House Inn - fresh local ingredients, creative and seasonally inspired options - and we offer a wide variety of items (guests order off of a small menu).

Thanks for choosing The Hartwell House Inn as your Ogunquit B&B!

We look forward to the opportunity to serve your "getaway" needs in the future!
