“Location could not be better”
Reviewed September 8, 2013

We've been visiting Ogunquit for over 30 years, and this Labor Day visit was the first time we stayed at the Norseman. While the interior of the units were somewhat outdated, the rooms were very clean and smelled neither musty nor like cigarette smoke. This trip we had two teenage boys, and we would roust them in the morning to go set up our spot on the beach while we went to get coffee. We had beach time from 9am to 4 pm. With parking for one car included in the hotel price, we stowed our beach gear in the car which wasvary handy AND allowed us to avoid the beachparking lot rate which was $25/day during our visit. Usually we stay at a hotel along the Marginal Way, but for convenience, we will be visiting the Norseman again. The beach trolley runs all the way to Perkins Cove, which was another plus for the location. We'll be back!

Room Tip: We stayed Portside, which was chaeper than full ocean front, and the views were wonderful. There are...

UNLIKE Daniel & Wind dancers reviews, Larry and the staff AGAIN have made my families vacation a GREAT getaway .We always rent two rooms. No , the Norseman isn't the Waldorf-Astoria but it doesn't pretend to be. It's a GREAT run FAMILY resort with FRIENDLY desk staff, housekeeping and parking attendants. Splash & Huckelberrys again make the trip worthwhile, especially if you arrive early. Sure , upgrades are need here and there, but they get done. We've been coming to Maine for 26 yrs and to the Norseman 15yrs. + without ANY problems. (Kids on a beach or near one always make noise-they're excited to be here). We're coming back Oct 12-14 for ANOTHER fine mini vacation. Thanks for being therefor my family.

Waterdancer54's review is spot on. My family has been coming to the Norseman for 10+ years and its greatest asset (possibly only asset?) is that its the only motel on Oqunquit beach. So you cannot beat its location, particularly helpful if you have kids and all the beach "stuff" that you take on vacation (meaning you do not have to lug it very far -- open the sliding door and throw it on the beach!). Otherwise the rooms are dated but kept super clean. You are paying for the location and that is all. If you keep your expectations in line, then you will enjoy your stay.

The Norseman Resort sits on the best property in Ogunquit. It is truly baffling why its Management is content to have it remain a lack-luster destination; surely with some creative investment, both the Norseman and its restaurant, Splash, could be the envy of its many competitors along the Marginal Way. Instead, the property is neglected, like some beachfront Cinderella, while Ogunquit's less attractive step-sisters get beautified for the summer's guests.

The Norseman is not a "resort", but rather a "motel". If your room is not ready upon your arrival, be prepared to use the over-crowded public beach bathrooms across the parking lot to freshen up. The amenities in our $360/night oceanfront room consisted of 4 small bars of Dial soap, one of them opened, 2 small bottles of previously used Dial body lotion, and one small bottle of combined shampoo/conditioner. The outdoor carpet on the balcony overlooking our drop-dead gorgeous view of the beach was soiled with a season's worth of seagull droppings. The metal piling supporting and protecting the Sundown building from washing away has a large and growing rust hole just below the first floor balcony on its north corner.

This points to an even bigger problem: the beach at Ogunquit is facing serious erosion problems. In the 40 years we have been coming here, never have we seen the water mark so high. This is the first season we observed the evening high tide crashing up against the sides of the Norseman, pounding the cason. If this was a property in Florida or North Carolina, the Federal Government would have been contacted, and the property owner would have made the relatively small investment of pumping sand from the ocean sandbars back up onto the beach.

The management of the Norseman and the other Ogunquit properties seem blithely ignorant that their pricey investments are in imminent danger. Once the enormous tourist population realizes that they must evacuate the beach and river areas evey day at high tide or be forced to cram like sardines into a two foot wide strip at the base of the dune, people will just stop bringing their families here.

Unless something is done to remediate the sand situation, Ogunquit Beach will no longer be the "beautiful place by the sea"---it will be IN the sea---and the Norseman will be the first casualty!

Dear Waterdancer54,
Thank you for staying with us and sharing your opinion. I can assure you that we are not interested in operating a "lack-luster" destination and I am very sorry if you believe that the Norseman is neglected. Due to our location, the Norseman naturally takes a great deal of abuse each year from Mother Nature. Consequently, we spend several thousand each year on repairs and maintenance. We also strive to make the property better each year by renovating guest rooms. There are many "motels" in Ogunquit that classify their businesses as "resorts" even though they lack any food and beverage outlets or other amenities such as fitness centers. The Norseman Resort is absolutely a "resort" by hospitality definition due to the fact that we have 2 restaurants, full service bar, outdoor beachfront dining, tennis court, fitness facilities, outdoor heated swimming pool and of course Ogunquit Beach and the Atlantic Ocean right outside of your guest room door. The sea wall which you refer to was repaired this past winter and will be repaired again this season. We will certainly speak to the seagulls about doing their business on the decks as it is quite annoying for our housekeeping staff to clean up after them daily. Unfortunately, many guests find it amusing to feed the birds unhealthy food and have them circling about but then become annoyed when the birds soil their decks. We always monitor ocean activity very closely and will continue to do so. We apologize for the housekeeping oversight in your room and hope that the matter was brought to our attention for immediate remedy. Thank you again and we hope that you choose the Norseman the next time you visit Ogunquit.

Situated right on Ogunquit beach. Centrally located and within walking distance to many restaurants, shops and of course ocean! The room had a kitchenette area with nice size fridge, 2 burner cooktop and sink. Utensils, towels and extras supplied. Nice touch! For the people looking for the "Ritz Hotel"...you won't get it here. It's a rustic, ocean atmosphere where you track sand all over the place (which the hotel staff clean to keep at a minimum.) And yes there are many people around because it's by the ocean people! Very clean, friendly staff and (oh, did I mention) on the ocean! Loved it! Only con is parking...a little cramped but we could deal with that. Will definitely return!

We tried this for the first time this year, wanting to be closer to the beach. Mistake! This hotel is dated and very noisy. Kids running around, beachgoers tramping across the desks at all hours, no privacy on the decks because they are communal. No deck chairs to call your own even the ones outside your room get used by others. When we voiced our concerns to Dave at the front desk, he was rude, snippy and impatient. Maybe a different time of year would be better, but the rooms would still be dated. Also, no screens on the sliders, so you could not enjoy the ocean breezes without bugs coking in. A friend stayed at their sister hotel, the aspinquid, at the sametime we were wt the Norseman and we visited there. She had a lovely renovated room, and it had a private deck. When we inquired abou rates, the front desk there was helpful and very pleasant. We may try there next spring, but not the Norseman. We are done with that mess!

We recently had a great time our recent stay at the Norseman Resort. We stayed in a Gangplank room with a great view of the river. These rooms are off the beaten path and have a lot of privacy. The rooms were clean and well maintained. Staff was friendly and very helpful. We have stayed in the Gangplank rooms for the past 6 years and hope to get back next year.

Room Tip: Try the Gangplank rooms.
