One of the best! Nice change from the lobster rolls. Cosy provincial atmosphere. Make sure you make reservations early. Three days was not early enough for us to get a 7-7:30.

Don't waste your money at Roost. Locals don't call it RUSE for nothing.
They advertise all over the place including the Ogunquit Playhouse. Forget it, advertising does not make a pleasant experience happen. I had tried this place before and thought that it had possibly improved but it did not. Meals were a selection of interesting items but were not very good.
Service needs improvement since we had to wait for everything and even had to stop another waiter for some water.
There are many good places around so I'd recommend anywhere else. Cape Neddick Inn almost across the street, Barnacle Billy's,Ogunquit Lobster Pound, Jonathan's, Billy's Clam Shack in Wells, etc., etc.

Provence was a treat in contrast to our previous night's so-so dinner at the antiseptic Arrows up the road.
Kenny our waiter, knew the menu in detail with wines to compliment.
Kenny's attention to detail and knowledge was great along with a warm
personality, making for a great night out as it should be!!
The food was great and we will go back first chance.

Our experience at 98 Provence was unusual. The service was not good. First, the waitress did not seem too happy overall. It took ages b/f she even offered us drinks. Never a smile. We were seated upstairs and I think the staff has trouble communicating with the people downstairs and in the kitchen. The wait was significant b/w courses. Not the type of service you expect from this type of restaurant.
However, the food was exceptional. The foie gras appetizer was excellent. Everything was delicious and well presented from beginning to end. So, if you don't mind paying for poor service but excellent food, this restaurant is for you.

To start with the imperfect... we were seated at our reservation time, 7:30, and were served our entrees at 8:45. Our server was pretty much invisible during this time, except to deliver our appetizer (gazpacho), which made us feel somewhat ignored. While the actual wait was the same for the table next to us, their server at least stopped by periodically and acknowledged the long wait.

Okay, so much for the bad news. On the other hand, if the quality of the meal is your primary measure of a restaurant, then 98 Provence will be a shining star. Each of the 4 items I tasted - the yellow tomato gazpacho, the hanger steak, (my wife's) roast chicken, and the almond nougat dessert - was superb. Perfectly cooked, interestingly seasoned, and accompanied by unusual and tasty sides. And I don't say this just because we were hungry from the long wait!

My sense is that the chef is very involved with the preparation of each plate that leaves his kitchen, resulting in great food but slow service.

This was my 3rd or 4th visit to 98 Provence and can recommend the meal wholeheartedly - the service not withstanding. Prices are reasonable for the value delivered.
