“Incredibly accomodating”
Reviewed June 15, 2010

We love historic hotels, and the Asticou is an excellent example of an historic Maine inn. The location and view are spectacular, but what we really loved was the old-fashioned charm. The staff were incredibly accommodating. When we arrived, our king-sized bed was broken into two twin beds. We pushed them together and did not complain. However, in conversation with a manager, we mentioned it, and our beds were fixed within minutes.
Our dinner was excellent, and the staff were very attentive. We really enjoyed our stay.
Yes, the hotel is rustic and older. But it also doesn't have fake granite bathrooms, incompetent staff, or cheap bedding, like you might find in newer hotels. It has stood the test of time.
If you come to the Asticou and something doesn't suit you, please tell them, and allow them to make your stay more enjoyable. They are in the hospitality business and the staff are really truly hospitable and welcoming.

My son had his wedding here.We had rented one of the cottages for the 'rest of our family' including some from Tennessee. The guest list was a little over 100 and everyone stayed at least one night in cottages or the Inn itself. The service and banquet facilities were exceptional. The staff was the best.

Everyone we talked to had raved about Asticou as one of the best places to stay in the Acadia region. And while the location is exemplary, the hotel itself desperately needs some updating. If you want "rustic charm", then this is the place for you: plenty of history, interesting building style, etc. But rustic charm also translates into: rooms with bugs and cobwebs, showers that run hot and cold arbitrarily, extraordinarily SMALL rooms, a heating system that barely heats, terrible continental breakfast, and drafty windows. Again, if this is what you're looking for, even with it's only 40 degrees out, then this is your place. But for people who want hot water consistently, more than 50 sq. ft. of room, a sink that's in the BATHROOM rather than the bedroom, a heating system that actually heats, etc., you're better off finding a different, and more affordable option. Our queen size room, that was just wide enough to fit a bed against the wall and then about three feet of space (just enough to open the door), cost about $220 with taxes.

To their credit, they were a good host for my friend's wedding. But beyond that, it was a disappointing experience. PLENTY of other options to pick from.

Being from Maine, I'd heard great things about the Asticou Inn all my life. We finally decided to stay there. We had great expectations and really wanted to love it. We hated to admit to each other, "This really isn't that great -- especially for the price." We knew it was an old hotel, and that's fine. While our room was spacious, with a great view of the harbor, it had absolutely no character. Character is the least you expect from such a venerated hotel. It was clean, but the old, heavily painted window casings had lots of dust in the crevaces. The tub was heavily worn and scratched. There was trash on the deck from the previous tenants. There was lint in the bedsheets.
I suppose there can be a degree of charm in this kind of place. A once-elegant, now a little tattered remnant a less hurried, quiet summer resort. But this didn't strike that note for us. It just seemed...second rate.
We ate dinner that night in a restaurant in Bar Harbor -- Mache Bistro -- FABULOUS.
The next morning we ate breakfast at the Asticou, and were very glad not to have chosen to have dinner there the night before.
Rather than have the complimentary continental breakfast, we chose some heartier fare off the menu because we planned a busy day ahead.
Our eggs and pancakes arrived cold, as did the toast, which made it even harder to use the ice cold butter.
I wish we'd just skipped breakfast and waited until 11:30 for the best-on-earth popovers at the Jordan Pond House in Acadia National Park.
The view was beautiful, the people were nice, but the rest of the stay was a huge disappointment.

I was very disappointed with this hotel. Flies on the windowsills in our room. Of course the 4th floor (attic-feel) was not air-conditioned so the room was hot, hot, hot. The overall feel is of a hotel that was once lovely but in need of an upgrade. Time to call the decorator!

My family stayed in the Topsider cottages. I cannot believe I paid over $300 for such a shabby room with such poor service. Light bulbs didn't work and were not replaced after requesting help. You could hear everything from the room next door. Housecleaning was subpar and they left garbage in the room one day. This created a horrible stench which was made worse since one of the large front windows wouldn't open. Again, I requested this to be fixed and they never even responded. The hotel is a nice location, but they really need an overhaul and new management.

A beautiful old inn at the head of Northeast Harbor, with a fantastic view, but it could use an update. Our room, in the Bird Bank house, was cramped and dowdy. It looked like something my grandmother might have liked (and I'm over 50). The floor was quite slanted, with the head of the bed several inches lower than the feet--guaranteed to induce esophageal reflux in anyone after a big lobster dinner. We had to remake our bed so that our feet would be lower (putting our heads in the middle of the room). I'm told there are better rooms--ask for one, rather than letting my experience keep you from staying here. If you need constant cell phone coverage, this is not the place to stay, but internet access is good in the public parts of the main lodge.
