We hiked the 1/2 mile gradual trail up to the Thuya Garden. The entrance to the Asticou Terrace is easy to miss...look for it on the right at a small parking area just past the Asticou Lodge going toward Seal Harbor. You have to cross the street to enter the slight incline for the first tier. There is a covered bench near this entrance. Then continue to climb the zigzag trail to the pavilion and enjoy a wonderful view of Northeast Harbor. Climb further and you will reach another rustic covered seating area with still a beautiful (higher) view of NE Harbor. If you keep going another 10 minutes you will reach Thuya Lodge and and Garden. This time of year they are planting so don't expect much for your effort. Hint: if you choose not to take the moderate hike just continue toward Seal Harbor and you will see the road to Thuya Lodge on your left and drive to the gardens. Either way it is a nice find. All free but watch the traffic!!

We had a great hike through the gardens and very much enjoyed it. It was fall but still many flowers in bloom and the grounds were very well maintained. We were there during the time the national parks were all closed due to the USA government shutting down so this was a very pleasant diversion.

I'm glad we walked up from the bottom as the landscaping is part of the experience. There is a view from a pagoda at the top which is worth a few minutes. The gardens were rather modest at this time of year. We wandered through the back gate along the path through the woods following a sign saying Map House, which we never found and down to the Azalea gardens at the bottom. We met nobody. The car park is a short way back along the road. (Government closure of National Park)

Thuya Gardens are more about magnificent granite work and views than gardens. It is a quarter-mile climb uphill all the way through amazing granite outcroppings. There are steps. The gardens up top are quite lovely but very limited in size. There is a parking lot at the top but then you miss the granite and the views of the harbor.

We never knew what the garden was like until we saw the amazing flowers and Thuya Lodge which is frozen in time in 1928. We were told at the Asticou Inn that the trail to the gardens was about 100 feet up the road. Don't walk it! DRIVE up the single-lane road to a small parking lot at the gardens. Be careful. It really is single-lane with two-way traffic. There was a woman in the parking lot who made her family walk back down the trail and come back to pick her up in the car.
The abundance of flowers in the garden was overwhelming. I can't believe that they were all in bloom when we were there in late July. We hesitantly went into the Lodge for a peek, but the docent was very encouraging for us to explore all of the rooms and offered a lot of insight of the way of life in the 1920's.
