“Walk up the stairs to the garden”
Reviewed March 4, 2012

I had seen internet phtographs of this garden and the stone stairway that leads to it. I wanted to try and take that photograph myself. We found the parking lot across the street and set off on foot for the garden.

We found and the stairs and I took my photos. Then, we climed the stairs. Not too bad, but if you have problems with stairs this is not the approach for you. It was a bit of a hike after the stairs, perhaps 1/4 mile and you go past a hotel to find the gardens

The area of the gardens is not very large, but it will take you time to walk about it an apprecitate the beauty of the plants. Flowers, trees, bushes it is a pleasant walk. There were very few visitors present, so it was quiet and I had freedom to set up for photos without concern for others.

Restroom and a small gift shop on the property. Nice change of pace from the sightseeing in Acadia National Park. I do not recall if there was a minimal fee for entrance to the garden.

“Lovely Garden and Grounds”
Reviewed November 3, 2011

Beautiful grounds, gardens and views. The garden was winding down for the season, but I could picture it in full bloom. The historical house was closed also. We were the only ones there, so we felt special to be among the trees, the views, the lovely outbuildings, the walk through the woods. It was wonderful. Do not hesitate - but do not expect "awe" or "granduer"; expect serinity, grace, beauty, and delight in the outdoors and the splendor of nature.

“A bit of a hike but well worth it”
Reviewed September 29, 2011

On our way to Northeast Harbor, we stopped long enough to climb the terraces for the views of the Harbor and to visit the wonderful gardens that are a hidden treasure. You can drive up Thuyla drive and skip the short hike but the terraces offer such wonderful views, it's worth the effort. Go 1/2 mile east toward Seal Harbor on Rte 3 from the Junction with Route 198; look for the small gravel lot on the side of the road with a small sign saying Asticou Terraces. Park, cross the road and follow the rock path that ascends the hillside. After you rerturn to your car, continue a short distance and you will see the Azalea Gardens on the right, also worth a visit.
While in Northeast Harbor, don't miss a trip to the Kimball Shop. They also have a fabulous clothing boutique a few doors down. But the home shop is absolutely mind boggling. The best shopping we found in Maine. It looks small but goes on forever! Every kind of china, kitchen ware, serving ware, lamps, rugs, furniture, luxury bedding, Woof nPoof dolls, etc, etc. We couldn't believe that such a small village could support such a wonderful shop. Must be a lot of folks with money in those woods!
Also the Shaw Contemporary Jewley shop across the street had a wonderful colleciton of inventive, original jewelry by the resident goldsmith.
