“Good Bread!”
Review of Tan Turtle Tavern

Looking for an outdoor lunch restaurant in Northeast Harbor Maine we settled on the Tan Turtle. Very pretty setting outdoors overlooking the harbor. Lots of open space and pretty views.

The Rubin ($13.95) special we heard was sufficient for two people and sounded perfect. When it arrived we understood the recommendation. The bread on the sandwich is so thick that it is impossible to take a full bite of both top and bottom of the sandwich.

French fries were included and very tasty. Excellent coleslaw. Unfortunately, the amount of meat in the sandwich was significantly limited. Although the bread was excellent less bread and more meat would have made a more perfect sandwich.

The bucket of beer special is excellent with five beers for $15.

Went in for breakfast just as they were opening. The eggs were good but very small. The little fried potato patties were ok, not much taste, but really absorbed the oil. We thought the iced tea was water with lemon, but she did say she was just brewing it as they just opened. It wasn't great, but I'd try it again a little later in the day when the oil is hot and the tea steeped.

We went on a foggy chilly night, and because we didn't bring coats, we couldn't sit outside. Instead we were sat under an air vent that was blowing cold air the whole time. We sat, and waited for 10 minutes before our server came to our table (mind you, the restaurant wasn't even that busy). Not a big deal. We ordered an app, and another girl brought it out. Then someone else brought out our food. We finished our meal, got one refill on waters from our waitress, and then sat and waited another 15 minutes with empty plates for our checks, while we watched the waitress across the restaurant wrap silverware and chat with her coworkers. I can't even tell you her name, because she never even introduced herself! The food was so so - our main dishes were expensive but delicious, but don't get the bruschetta - its a joke. a bowl of thin broth and seafood, and three small slices of baguette. There are many much better restaurants in Bar Harbor o go to - don't waste your time.

Food was very good. Huge portions though. Calamari was excellent with a great marinara sauce. One had mussels and declared them great, one had tuna melt, could not finish it and one had chowder and salad. That was the smart move, but definitely worth the ride over there. Lovely setting too.

Staying in Northeast Harbor for two weeks we decided to eat out. There are a few choices in Northeast Harbor and as we did not wish to drive far we chose th e Tan Turtle.
If you go do try the Fried Green Tomato Stack which is unlike any Fried Green Tomatoes we all know. Called the Fried Green Tomato Stack we were curious. It was delicious however, VERY filling. As said Do Try. Only comment - not a complaint- the serving is large & (it's an appetizer )could have been shared however, it was so unusual and so good I ate the whole thing!! Decide in the future the F.G. Tomatoes, a small salad and glass or two of Kendall Jackson chardonnay would do me for dinner! I followed with a seafood gumbo which I would give a 'fair' rating. my friend had shrimp Scampi which was also..okay. Could be because we were almost full with the fried G. Tomatoes.
