I think it's fair to say most Mexican/Tex-Mex/Southwestern restaurants have become indistinguishable one from the other. Same bucket o' chips, same bilious green fake margaritas, same plateloads of glop brought with a warning from the server about how hot the plate is.
On the other hand, there's Cervesas -- the way Mexican should be -- located behind a modest storefront in an unpaved parking lot in Newport, ME. Once inside you can't fail to be struck by the unique decor: orangey-gold walls filled with pictures, photos and posters of all sizes recalling the Southwest, cowboys and Native Americans.
Enjoy the pleasant ambience from a comfortable booth. Caveat: there are far too many flat screen TV's tuned to Fox News, but at least they're muted.
The food is what brings us back, though. Fresh, flavorful and reasonably priced -- you can't ask for more. I'd recommend the Mexican pizza or the margarita chicken, but there's lots more to choose from.
For beer snobs, the selection is rather pitiful, although the Magic Hat #9 will do in a pinch. The 'ritas are decent, and you can actually taste the tequila.
Servers are friendly and attentive.
