This was our second stop during our week long visit to Maine. It is about a five minute drive to the town where you will find dozens of shops and restaurants. The Inn is set on an idyllic hill with the ocean both in front and behind. We could see the ocean, at a distance, from our front facing room named Sheepscot Bay. When you go out onto the back lawn area, you can see the bay and the ocean beyond, through a clearing in the lovely evergreen trees. The grounds are brimming with flowers in summer and there are several sets of chairs to just sit and take in the views. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was very clean and decorated nicely.(But don't expect a luxurious bathroom.) The kids enjoyed riding the bikes available at the front door, borrowing a row boat to explore the cove, playing all sorts of games in the Pine Room and walking down to the secret spots in front of the Inn where you can watch the sun set off the coast. (Ask to borrow a map and bug spray if you go!) I actually found sea glass! Overall, I would say ours was a wonderful experience and I would recommend this Inn.

The coast of Maine is a partially sunken mountain range, which in sinking has left behind thousands of inlets, coves, and islands that now are playgrounds for thousands of summer visitors and residents as well. The pine forest that covers so much of the state extends nearly to the water, so cottages and inns are mostly hidden on the land side and only emerge when viewed from a boat. Compared to many other seaside summer retreats, which are scenes of the same social competition acted out the other nine months of the year in the city, the Maine coast is a far more diverse and democratic summer paradise with visitors from a wide range of backgrounds, from first-timers exploring the land of the lobster to families who have been returning to their cottages for generations. For three months, the Maine coast is a delight. For the rest of the year, it's rather chilly.
The Newagen Seaside Inn is a nearly perfect summer destination for visitors who aren't fortunate enough to have a cottage. It's old Maine with just enough modern touches to guarantee hot water and comfortable beds. Its site on a southern point of Southport Island is perfect, the food is good, the air is fresh, and the rocky coast is eternal. The only potential problem is that it has become a favorite of couples getting married, which can make weekend reservations problematic.
If you are exploring Maine for the first time - or the tenth - you will find that the Newagen Seaside Inn captures the essence of what makes this coast so magical and invigorating. We have been returning for 25 years and are all the better for it.

Room Tip: Seaside rooms are best but rooms on the other side look over the sea too; it's just a bit farthe...

After viewing the photo gallery and seeing some excellent reviews, we were excited to be visiting the Inn. Unfortunately, the actual experience did not live up to our expectations, and it is unlikely that we will return.

While the Inn owns a lot of property, the views of the bay and ocean are limited to one area due to surrounding private homes and cottages with frontage that is restricted to those who rent them. There is no beach.

The staff was generally as helpful as they could be (since most of them are foreigners there for summer work), but there was no information for guests on local restaurants, shops, sites to visit, tide tables, local flora and fauna.

The food was good, especially the breakfast buffet, which was very extensive, and the lobster bake on Tuesday was well worth attending. It is just too bad they did not start breakfast earlier than 7:30 AM, since the sun was up in the sky at 5:15 AM.

There were a lot of families there, and they monopolized the small salt water pool, and with the poor acoustics in the dining room, the children contributed to a noisy atmosphere as the parents let them do what they wanted to do. The “game room” was okay, but some of the games did not work, and items were missing (hard to play ping pong without a ball).

Finally, if you decide to go, check the weather forecast in advance. We were there during unseasonably hot weather in July, and there is no AC nor are there any ceiling fans in the rooms. The second floor was unbearably hot. The staff told us that the owners had put a lot of money into renovation, but it would seem that was renovation of the exclusive cottages and not in the inn itself.

The Newagen Seaside Inn is a classic Inn. Off the beaten path, relaxing, and worth the drive. The Staff are exceptionally friendly. Given the level of comfort, and the delicious included breakfast, this Inn is a terrific value.

This is an old fashioned seaside inn. No TVs, big fireplace in the common room, families playing board games, swimming, tennis, biking, boating, not to mention its own bowling alley. This is a beautiful setting and one of the most relaxing places I've ever stayed. Even the food is good in the restaurant.

Despite our phone reservation made based on a newsletter subscriber e-mail and informing inn of 3 children and use of e-mail promotion, we were charged $150 extra at checkout. Our reservation for 2 adults and three children was confirmed through multiple phone calls and an e-mail confirmation indicating two double beds and a cot. We were aghast that at check-out we were charged an additional $150 for our three children over a two night stay.

The person at the check-in desk was "amazed" that we didn't know there was an additional charge for children. The front desk clerk indicated that there is a difference for children under 7 and that we should have known that as well. We shared our written confirmation which indicated a cot with two double beds and our phone calls indicating three children. We have now examined the web site which she stated clearly described this charge but was unable to show my husband at checkout. The manager was unavailable due to wiffleball. Any mention of this fee is simply not on the web site or any brochure that we saw prior to our trip. Since checking out this morning, we have not found it anywhere on the web site. It feels like bait and switch. The front desk clerk indicated that we somehow were trying to sneak in our children, despite the fact that we clearly enjoyed the dining room, breakfast and amenities with our entire family.

We had been looking for a quick and quiet getaway to enjoy with our family to return to again and again. We thoroughly enjoyed the dining room, the amenities, and particularly Andrew, Mr. Tibbets and Antoinette. We are sad to say that we will not plan to return due to issues with the front desk. Had we known about this additional charge, we would not have traveled to Newagen. The cot was the most uncomfortable bed ever, and the children actually shared the double on the second night. I wish I could recommend this hotel as they have clearly made some lovely changes and updates to the Pine Room, pool, rooms, and dining area.

I brought each of my children here for a night with mom years ago, and we loved our time there. I have had a postcard on my refrigerator for years just waiting for the opportunity when we could travel here as a family. Well, we thought our 18th anniversary would be just the occasion. We have left there saddened and insulted by the front desk. We were handed the charges with no ability to discuss the misunderstanding.

My husband has tried to reach the manager all afternoon by phone but can only reach voice mail. This was a $150 lesson, and we hope that placing this information out there will be helpful to other families on their front end of their trip so that they can make choices appropriate to their means. For $185 per night per room, there are other options to consider.

Room Tip: Children cost $25 each per night. The cot was full of springs that hurt. Bring a sleeping bag and...

My husband and I used a Groupon offer to stay at the Newagen Seaside Inn mid-week in June. The Inn was clean and freshly painted everywhere for the beginning of the season. The addition of the diningroom beyond the bar area (off the livingroom) was very nice. The guest room was not large, but was perfectly adequate and had two double beds, a reading chair, a dresser and a desk. There is no TV or telephone. The Groupon included a buffet breakfast and a $40 credit in the diningroom. Breakfast was terrific and included juice and coffee, eggs, bacon, sausage, waffles or French toast and baked goods. Everything was delicious and there was plenty to eat. We had dinner one night in the diningroom and it was delicious. We chose the specials which were halibut and swordfish. There is a happy hour when all drinks are half price. Prices at the bar were quite reasonable. The Groupon turned out to be quite a good value and the Inn was very nice. Most guests (mid-week in June) were couples in their 50's or 60's. Lots of folks gathered in the lobby/livingroom during the day to use the free wifi. The weather was rainy so many folks sat with their Kindles by the fire and read while the rain poured outside! We didn't get to try the pool or hot tub. Our only complaint was that the walls are a bit thin and if guests are noisy, you can hear them. But it was a nice crowd and there wasn't enough noise to keep you awake. We will return to the Inn sometime in the future.
