They say that love is in the details and that's especially true when it comes to small inns like this. Unfortunately no one is paying attention to them here. From check-in, where we were offered zero assistance with our luggage, to the dead flower in the vase on our bathroom vanity......everything about this place speaks of underwhelming hospitality. A couple of pieces of last year's stale Halloween candy sitting in a bowl next to the stairs does not say welcome....it says neglect. Periwinkle Room was good sized and the bed was comfortable, but the bathroom was like a $59 roadside motel. Chipped formica vanity, water stained ceiling and molded plastic tub enclosure. Not what one expects at $200 a night.
In the other 3 inns we visited in Maine, the owners were highly visible, greeting guests at both check-in and breakfast, and offering assistance with dinner reservations, plans for the day, etc.. In two days here, we saw the owner only once, in passing.
Breakfast is pretty good. Buffet with baked goods, cereal and fruit, with a nicely prepared, cooked to order hot course. But it is served in a depressingly dark room with zero ambiance.
The one really bright spot of our stay was dinner. We ate at the bar and the food (main course of pasta and lobster) and service were excellent, albeit pricey. The bartender who served us was friendly and engaging.
Maybe the problem is that we visited at the end of a long busy season and everyone was just tired. But if you are charging at the top of the range for this area, you have to offer a better product.
