“Not great experience, but great location”
Reviewed November 5, 2013

We booked this B & B as we wanted to visit the nearby Shaker Village. Our stay didn't start well. We had no sat-nav in our hire car, my phone's internet wasn't working and we were quite lost. I rang the B & B to get directions but I got an answering machine message. We finally navigated our way to the site where we were greeted, unenthusiastically, by whom we presumed to be the host. He said he hadn't answered my call as he was busy mowing. We were shown to the room (which was nice, if a bit shabby) and then, after being told where we could walk to get an evening meal, that was it. No tea and coffee, no water, no information about the area, no access to a kitchen. We walked to get our evening meal (a very good pizza) and brought back a bottle of wine to drink with it. We had no bottle opener, so I rang the host three times. Again, no answer. We ended up digging the cork out with a knife and sitting in a dimly-lit sitting room (no table) drinking out of two slightly dirty glasses left in the room. The next morning we were treated to a nice breakfast but the damage had been done. The excuse we were given was that there was a wedding being held at the B & B that weekend, but ignoring the needs of your B & B guests is not appropriate. We will not recommend this B & B to any of our friends.

We are so sorry to hear your stay was not a pleasant one - we always want our guests to have the most comfortable and enjoyable experience possible. All of our guests are important to us and it is our intention to make the Chandler House experience "like visiting family" . Although we understand you will probably not stay with us again, we do hope you will not hold your negative experience against all B&B's - as it is a wonderful way to travel.

Originally, I had booked this inn, because it was close to where my son was getting married. As it turns out, I did not need this room and had other relatives take it instead. From the website, it looked to be an ideal place to stay, in a separate guest house. Although I did not stay there myself, I was told that what it turned out to be was the second floor of a guest house, which was not at all like the main house. While everything was remodeled and very clean, there was no television, no phone, no air conditioning and no closet. There did exist a coat rack of sorts, but there were no hangers. The breakfast was nothing more than a continental breakfast with melon so unripe it was too hard to eat. There were several women there who go every year to meet, although I'm not sure why. I felt terrible having someone take my place in what turned out to be an extremely overpriced venue. Don't be fooled by the pictures. Take your money elsewhere.

We chose the Chandler House because it was near relatives we were visiting. It was a very good choice. The Inn is beautiful. The room (we stayed in room #2) was clean and neat with a large updated bathroom. The hosts, Al and Shannon, were like family. We'll be back.

We've been going to the Chandler House for several years now as part of an annual vacation to attend a reunion. Staying there for a week in the summer has become a much looked forward to part of our tradition. Truly a peaceful, lovely, restful, beautiful place, reflective of the owners personalities completely. Proximity to nearby hiking and activities, LLBean and Freeport just add to the perfection. And of course, there's the breakfast.....ahhhhh, always wonderful. Fresh eggs from the hen house, endless coffee, good conversation and company.

Memories such as sitting on the front porch with another guest as they quietly picked out a tune on a guitar, hot tubbing under the stars, misty mornings wandering the grounds, chatting over afternoon cookies (gluten free...they miss no detail) with Al and Shannon come to mind.

We've come to think of Al and Shannon, our kind and fascinating innkeepers, as friends we look forward to seeing as much as the trip itself. All stress melts as soon as we pull up the drive. And of course, we never want to leave.

Thanks Al, thanks Shannon, see you soon.

I came to the area to attend parents' weekend at Bates College. Al and Shannon couldn't have been more welcoming and enjoyable to be around! The rooms are beautiful, the common areas comfortable, and the GROUNDS are huge and pastoral! Did I mention the amazing pet chickens? It's just a beautiful spot on a country road, but it's very accessible to the Lewiston/Auburn area. The breakfasts were fabulous and I really appreciated how Al and Shannon encourage guests to sit at the big table to chat with one another. My daughter spent one night with me and really enjoyed getting away from her school bubble! I plan to come back with my husband and enjoy Al and Shannon's hospitality again!

We made a detour to New Gloucester to see the nearby Shaker village and we are so glad that we stayed at the Chandler House. We were made to feel welcome right away from Shannon. The house is turn of the century, large and comfortable. At breakfast we met Al who was as friendly and hospitable as Shannon. They made us feel right at home. If you have the time, sign up for massage therapy since Shannon is a LMT.
Also, go down the road to tour around the tiny New Gloucester to see how people have restored the historic homes. The Shaker village nearby is really interesting. Shannon also carefully wrote out the directions to nearby Cyndy's where we had a nice dinner. Thanks Shannon and Al!

We were in New Gloucester for a wedding and the Chandler House was the perfect place to stay for the weekend. Al and Shannon make delightful breakfasts each morning; don't plan on eating lunch, as you'll be full until the late afternoon!

Our room, #5 on the top floor of the home, was like our own apartment with living area (small TV/couch & chair), desk, Queen bed (firm, but super comfy!), and spacious bathroom with a wonderful shower.

There was a rare super heat wave while we were there, but luckily our room had A/C (apparently one of the rooms in the separate guest house doesn't?). The rest of the house does not have A/C and could benefit from a little better airflow (a lot of the windows were ready for winter, still boarded/taped to keep air *in*). For this reason we didn't get to try the hot tub or sauna, but both looked lovely and I can only imagine how wonderful it is to sit in the hot tub and look at all the stars.

The common areas (breakfast room, living room with fireplace, 2 other sitting areas) were nice, but since it was so warm we didn't use them. Tea was put out with a sweet snack each afternoon through the evening, which was wonderful.

The grounds were spacious and it was great to go for an early morning walk around the property. The front porch has rocking chairs and it was relaxing to watch bikers ride by on the road.

This is close to the New Gloucester Village Store (fantastic!) with a great selection of wine and beer, plus a wonderful menu of homemade pizzas and sandwiches (what bread!). It's also close to Freeport (20-30 minutes) and Pineland (awesome market and grounds).

Room Tip: Room #5 on the top floor of the home is extra-spacious and wonderful. The bathroom is very large. Th...
