My husband and topped off our vacation with dinner at the Freedom Cafe and Public House in Naples, Maine...right on Sebago Lake. It was a lovely day, so we opted for the back deck overlooking the lake. The restaurant itself is large with a fabulous bar area, but on this day, everyone was outside dining al fresco. We ordered the stuffed portobello mushroom (portobello mushroom dipped in balsamic vinaigrette and grilled...then filled with a mixture of artichoke hearts, roasted red peppers, kalamata olives, and feta cheese--it was yummy. My husband had the award-winning chile and he could taste why it won the "Sunday River Chili Coof-Off 2010". For my entree, I had the grilled halibut, which was char-grilled and topped with lobster meat and a cognac wine sauce...very well done (couldn't finish and took leftovers home)! My husband had the half pount strip steak and claimed it was the best steak he had eaten in a very long time...not to mention the real mashed potatoes, which were delicious...no skins (which we feel is the lazy way to prepare mashed potatoes). There was no room for dessert, but we will head back this summer (we have a home in Portland) to experience this fine restaurant again...the wait staff were amazing (got to taste the chili before ordering it) and we were well taken care of...the restrooms were absolutely immaculate...another reason to return to this clean and pleasant environment. Other offerings on the menu are: ahi tuna, fish tacos, sea scallops, baked haddock, meatloaf, prime rib, chicken, mushroom spinach ravioli, and shrimp...oh, and fried clams and fisherman's platter. You can order burgers and sanwiches as well.
