This is by far one of my favorite lunch spots in Maine. The screened-in porch overlooking the water is lovely. The soups, sandwiches and desserts are freshly prepared and scrumptious! This is a MUST try!

We've frequented this place for more than a decade. It is an unexpected treasure off the beaten track. Great creative meals at reasonable prices, prepared and served by a hardworking and pleasant staff. The breakfasts and lunches are consistently very good cafe fare. The dinner menu offered on "Music Night" is excellent and the music is very enjoyable. The setting on Minnehonk Lake, the interior finishes and tables, and the guest art exhibits make for an atmosphere that is unique and fun. The logistics of ordering and seating are somewhat different from an average restaurant, but not a barrier to new visitors unless you are afraid to just ask.

This is one of the only two places to enjoy food in the Mt. Vernon/Vienna area. The setting is above average with a pond out the back windows. In the summer there is often a nice breeze coming through the open windows. The furniture is average except the wooden picnic table near the front door. Apparently an attempt to seat a party of more than 4. The food is eclectic and changes fairly often. Most enjoy the sandwiches.and breakfast foods. The cafe is open until 2 P.M. most days.

They open some evenings a month. I experienced an October evening. One must make reservations and indicate one of two food choices for the evening. When a friend and I were there one evening we were seated with a couple we had never seen before, or since. The couple had been there before and came prepared with flatware, wine glasses, etc. That was because the uninitiated were cutting steak with plastic knives and forks. We found out by watching others that we should get in line to let the staff know we were there and to start cooking our order. We were at a table within elbow brushing room with the musicians. It was very uncomfortable. The food was fine, the music okay, if a bit loud in our location, and overcrowded. Our table neighbors are still unknown to us as the place was too loud to converse. We left as soon as we finished eating.

During their regular hours you need to go to the counter to order. The menu is on a whiteboard on the wall. There are baked goods, coffee choices and wine, soda, bottled water, etc. as well as the main dish food. The owner may or may not speak to you. Communicating is not a strong point for him. Preparing good food is.

We have visited the Olde Post Office Cafe numerous times. The Karma has always been terrible and comes from its owner who is rude and not accomodating. We have gone due to its unique setting and good , unusual, but overpirced food. In our visti prior to this one, my wife ordered a Raspberry lime-Rickey and they forgot the Raspberry flavor which is not a big deal, but when I went back to have it added Bob, the owner, said it would be another 50 cents. I produced the slip showing we had paid for the Raspberry squirt and he got indignant and made us feel like we had made the mistake and rambled about how hard it is to make a living. On this visit my wife asked if they had chips as none were out. Bob said that they never have had chips. Every visit we had been to previously we bought chips. He rudely and sarcastically asked, "What do you want me to do? Run next door to the store and buy you chips?"
No Bob, we just want you to be polite. You have a good product, but the service does not come with a smile, but rather a snarl! Be nice and accomodating. You may have enough summer traffic to make it, but we keep you going year round.

On the way home to the coast of Maine from Farmington, I took the detour through the Belgrade Lakes to check the place out. Mount Vernon is a Brigadoon in an area of Maine that surprises you in a good way with creative energy in art and food - it shares this energy with neighboring towns Kent's Hill (with a prep school) and Readfield. The cafe sits on the edge of Minnehonk Lake in the center of the little town. I was welcomed with a pleasant hello the minute I walked in, and the place was doing a fine lunch business even at 1:30 pm on a Tuesday. Jay, an open and helpful staffer volunteered the Thai Chicken Salad Sandwich as the best thing that day on a menu that was moderately priced and eclectic. The entire staff reflected the same earnestness and welcome. The sandwich was great, the vegetables crisp and the peanut butter-Thai-thing reminded me why some food fusion actually works, the tea homemade and from an old crock stand, the slaw fresh and crunchy, the dessert brownie the kind worth cheating for. The place was full of local art that reflected the spark of energy barely contained within the smartly painted walls of an old and classic Maine Post office. Believe the reviews and visit here on a day when your passing through, or want to pass through another world worth seeing.
