Although Abel's can be a bit pricey, it is well worth it for the amazingly good lobster and blueberry pie. The benches were situated so it was very scenic looking on the lake.

Location, location, location. The restaurant is located to the southwest of Bar Harbour along picturesque Somes Bay. It's a nice little day trip to drive around from Frenchman's bay to Southwest Harbour and then north to Somes Bay. There is indoor seating which looks through tall pine trees onto the water with views of the pier and sailing boats. We were ushered outdoors which consists of picnic tables on the dusty earth. The tables/benches were very dusty, we had to ask for the service staff to wipe them down before sitting down. The menu includes mainly Italian inspired dishes including Lobster. And since this is the summer with the cheapest lobster anywhere (at $3.00/lb)r, we thought that a meal of lobster Alfredo and Lobster Newburg at $33/entree would be spectacular. Sadly, though there was a reasonable amount of lobster, the main ingredient was pasta with some lackluster sauces. We substituted the corn veggie instead of the fries or other offering. The corn was over cooked (or maybe just sat too long after cooking) and tasted very starchy. The cocktail of the day was great ($12). Because the price was very expensive for an inadequate meal we didn't bother trying dessert. THe appetizers was the clam chowder which was the best part of the meal though we've had better chowder in San Diego and other places- including New Jersey. So- beware of the high cost for not very tasty food. Maybe it was on off night- but we can't recommend the place especially given the cheap cost of lobster this august and pasta. The staff is certainly friendly and willing to please. Outside seating has a view of the lobster shack where the lobster is boiled- great for the kids to look at!

Unlike the roadside stands that soak their lobster in chlorine salt water, Abel's has their tanks right off the Sound so the water is natural.

We sat outside overlooking the Sound. About a dozen clean picnic tables. Seating inside on two levels.

Lobster cocktail was about a pound and the very best. Fresh steamed clams were amazing. Lobster sautée was a pound and a half of heaven. Fresh homemade rolls and a very good Bloody Mary.

Nothing fried except fries and no fish. Just lobster and clams done fresh and best. Great for lunch but open for dinner as well. Around since 1939.

ate at Abels this past weekend-place is nice(views, etc) and the owners and staff are incredible-so friendly-not fake friendly for a bigger tip, either. the prime rib was ok-a little tough. the steamers-some of the best i've ever had. good clam chowder as well. dinner comes with choice of fries or baked potato.(overcooked and small-size of my fist (small). corn on the cob-$4.00 for one.(ridiculous) specialty drinks are delicious-tho,a bit pricey ($12.00 each) no drink list-so you don't know price until bill comes. bread-awful. lobsters-very good(have to admit tho, i have had better) still very good, tho. my biggest gripe is the price-a 1&3/4 lb. is $42.00(totally outrageous-especially considering lobster prices are at an all time low-about $3.99 a lb). the lobster dinner only comes w/fries or potato. that's it-everything else is extra. so if you're willing to pay $42.00 for a lobster-by all means-go and enjoy. but, there are plenty of other restaurants that are almost or even as good for less than 1/2 Abels prices. lots of roadside places that have picnic tables and do steamers, lobsters, and other seafood-even barbeque and burgers. good food-lots of fun and cheap. if you go to Abels-the one thing you won't be disappointed in is the staff-wonderful.

We found our way to Abel's lobster pound after a few wrong turns that lead us down some beautiful vistas along Soames Sound (a natural fiord) and found an unexpectedly lovely outdoor eating area and the best lobster lunch ever - and we have had a few. The menu was expensive! But since it was such a beautiful day - we dove in and loved it - lunch was $100 for 3 - we had a couple of beers, my daughter had a blueberry soda, and entrees were 20-28 a piece. Steep but highy recommendede - this is not a lobster stew, or lobster roll, or lobster cesear that will be forgotten. Enjoy!
