We took the ferry from Boothbay Harbor to visit this secluded peaceful island. Its charm becomes apparent as soon as you approach the island. Take a relaxing walk to Lobster Cove to see the old shipwreck, continue on the trail to see the stone monuments (piles of rocks near the shore) built by the visitors. On the way back, try the locally brewed beer. Visit the local artists and appreciate their work.

Monhegan Island is a wonderful place to visit to get away from it all, see lots of rocky shore, do some hiking, experience Lord of the Rings-esque pine and moss forests, and just meander along nothing but dirt roads and trails, as well as a very small town. The #1 trail around the island is a must-see, with beautiful vistas that not everyone has the guts to enjoy...the hiking isn't as difficult as the map implies, but bring good hiking shoes, a snack, and a good book for that special spot you find on a cliff overlooking the ocean. Keep in mind - there are difficult spots. Must bring flashlight - there are no streetlights! Electricity is limited. The town is dark at night...with a few music events here and there. It's so quiet, and so different. This is why many artists over the years have flocked here...but on the down-low, including the Wyeth family. Just a short drive north of Portland, and a ferry ride away, and you're worlds away. The Trailing Yew offers a relatively reasonable rate for a single person, with breakfast and dinner included. You meet people, but you have to be comfortable making conversation. I stayed in a room with no electricity and oil lamps, a private entrance, and my own sink, set into the pine trees. It was like living in a creaky house museum...but there are more modern accommodations too. Lobster Cove at sunset...must see! And Gull Cove...for imagining what the world would be like with only seagulls, and no humans. Weird, quiet, still there's tourists around. Lovely

1st time to Monhegan island for a day trip. The ocean views were magnificent. We hiked all over and packed a lunch with us. Saw the shipwreck and lighthouse. The ferry ride was informative and the captain took time on the way back to follow a Minke whale for a bit.

Yesterday I was fortunate enough to go to the beautiful Island. We took the ten thirty to four thirty trip. In the time that we had, we explored the recommended trails. It was beautiful! I want to go back again and explore the North half of the Island. A lot of walking but well worth the trip. I spoke with the 'painters' on the Island. That was interesting. and saw a lot of nice things along the way. I thoroughly enjoyed the ride also. Betty D.
