My husband and I went there July 2010. We loved the place. The hotel itself is so clean, crisp, beautiful. Renovations seemed to be really recent. The view from porch is so wonderful. The staff were so helpful. The meals were terrific.

You do not come to Monhegan Island for the usual touristy things like spas and great shopping and pools with cabanas. The island has no paved roads, but some 17 miles of trails that criss-cross the small island to take you to some of the most gorgeous, unspoiled and most-painted scenery on the East coast. Overnight visitors can have their bags transported to their Inn or B&B or hotel by one of the island pickup trucks. Most of the "attractions" like gift shops, cafes, and small grocery stores are within about a 1/4 mile walk from the pier. I recommend the Fish House for the most amazing lobster roll, and the friendliest, most enthusiastic service!!

We had a front/ocean view room w/private bath at the Island Inn. It was TINY, but we only were there to sleep and change clothes. The bathroom had a small shower stall, but overall the bathroom was big enough. Big windows open up to catch the ocean breeze! No phone, no TV, but we did have internet service at the hotel.

We only ate breakfast at the inn, and it was delicious!! Buffet style with additional items you could have cooked to order. The blueberry pancakes were very good, but the lobster scrambled eggs were out of this world!! These were the BEST eggs I have ever eaten...yum! Had to go back for seconds on those ;-)

Before check-in and after check-out you can use the inn's bathrooms to change your clothes if you wish, and they store your luggage for you. After hiking, we enjoyed sitting on the inn's front lawn in their Adirondack chairs sipping wine and watching the sun set. If you prefer not to sit outside, there are rocking chairs on the wide porch and several sitting rooms inside the hotel. A lot of people get take-out and eat their lunches or dinners/suppers on the lawn picnic-style. Very relaxed atmosphere and excellent service all-around at the inn.

We had a front side room that overlooked the harbor and provided a great view including a wonderful sunset. The only vehicles on the island are a few pick-up trucks used to transport supplies and visitor's baggage so it is very peaceful. With 17 miles of hiking trails, you can experience some great views. The hotel staff was very helpful and courteous. The dining menu was varied and the food excellently prepared. The breakfast buffet (included in the cost of the room) offered a good variety and was also excellent. For those that can't be out of touch, you can actually get cell phone coverage on an island 10 miles off the coast of Maine! This area has numbers of art galleries and well as artists that come to paint the scenery.

This is a great place to stay....the location on the island can't be beat! We stayed in the Pierce Cottage and had a very large, open and airy room. Very clean and well decorated. The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. The breakfast buffet was delicious and even included scrambled eggs with lobster. We ate dinner and lunch there and thought the food was delicious. Although a bit expensive, I felt that it was well worth it. We will always treasure our stay at The Island Inn and would enthusiastically recommend it to others.

We did not stay there but ate an evening meal there. There were less than 10% of the tables occupied (and many seasonal residents had not arrived by the state of the lawns) and we were asked if we had a reservation. We thought they were joking.

We had a cup of soup and a chicken and a fish meal and the price was $65.00. The meal was nothing special. The potatoes were dreadful. By the end of our meal, still less than 20% of the tables were occupied. What, requiring reservations makes the place exclusive? I will say that the staff was friendly.

The $12.50 lobster rolls at Carina were WAY better.

We stayed in one of their satellite buildings (a house divided into 6 rooms. We had a private bath which was nice the main hotel have some guests share bath in their 100 year old INN. The food was GREAT and the island is fun to hike with many small shops highlighting local crafts. There seem to be two crops Tourism and Lobster with Lobster season starting 1 week before our visit. We stayed the last weekend the hotel and Island were open to Tourists and this added to the charm. A great place to go to get away.

We stayed in Pierce Cottage not at the main inn. Pierce Cottage is owned by the Inn but is behind it, across from a lovely meadow. The room was on the third floor and was cozy and had a pleasant "cottagey" feel. The breakfasts (included in the price of the room) were wonderful. They had a more than adequate buffet that even included lobster scrambled eggs, but if you wanted freshly prepared eggs or blueberry pancakes, all you had to do was ask and they prepared it for you. The staff was top notch. The woman at the front desk was completely straight forward and accomodating. I didn't get her name but she is a gem. The grounds are beautiful. There's a long covered front porch overlooking the harbor where you can rock yourself in comfortable rocking chairs, or you can sit in on of the many Adirondack chairs set up on the lawn and drink in the view. This is a wonderful place to stay if you want to relax and get away from the rat race on the mainland.
