“Rustic Charm”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 25, 2008

Spent Memorial Day weekend 2008 here with my wife. A beautiful hotel on a beautiful spot. We were fortunate enough to get a room with a balcony and a private bathroom. The balcony was the main benefit of the room and a highly recommended addition if you go. It had a fantastic view overlooking the harbor and got great sun throughout the day. A similar view is available for all guests down on the hotel lawn which had several Adirondack chairs. The advantage of the balcony is that it was yours (i.e. private) and it was a bit higher up so perhaps had a slightly better view. Having a private bathroom was nice too – though the shared bathrooms seemed clean and tidy too.

The room itself was fairly rustic. A simple bed, bathroom and a bit of furniture. Definitely nothing upscale or particularly luxurious. Basically you’re paying here for location – right off the ferry landing with commanding views over the harbor. And in that context I think the hotel offers decent value. One thing to note is that our room got quite cool in the evenings (it was late May). However we had a thick comforter so once you were in bed you were warm and toasty.

The folks at the reception desk were friendly as was everyone we came across on the island. We ate at the hotel restaurant on one night – food was pretty good but seemed relatively pricey – even for local lobster. The breakfast buffet was fantastic however with lobster eggs, french toast, bacon, sausage, etc.

This was our 4th trip back to Monhegan Island and each time we have stayed at the Island Inn. We simply love it. The Island Inn is the perfect getaway for a relaxing vacation. We'll be back...

We were referred to the Island Inn by our dear friends (locals!) who live on wonderful Monhegan Island, and due in part to the fact that we were married there on August 16th we have thereby recently experienced the most memorable weekend of our lives. More than 20 of our guests stayed with us at the inn and adjoining Pierce Cottage and agreed, across the board, that we should all aspire to reconvene annually at this extraordinary establishment for a repeat performance of some of our most relaxing and enjoyable moments ever. The managers and front desk crew at the Island Inn are professional, highly experienced, exceptionally friendly, and completely dedicated to perfection in every regard. The rooms are extremely clean with awesome views, nice furniture, and fresh coats of paint. The food in the dining room on premises is some of the best that we have eaten anywhere (unique appetizers...lobster to die for...steaks comparable to Ruth's Chris (I swear)...magnificent desserts), and the wait staff is knowledgeable, personable, and driven in every respect to achieve the same degree of quality common to all aspects of the Island Inn experience. There are no finer moments than those spent quietly on the porch overlooking the harbor...witnessing the most beautiful sunsets that you have ever seen. Beyond any doubt, a few nights at the Island Inn, a few more days...better yet, even a week or two for the utmost experience...should be a lifetime priority on everyone's list for a series of memories and smiles that will forever outlive the visit and the island itself.

  • Liked — The staff and the quality in every aspect of service.
  • Disliked — The fact that we didn't decide earlier to stay longer.

My husband & I spent 2 days at the Island Inn & loved it! The staff was so friendly & helpful, we felt like we where staying with friends. They went out of their way to see that we could take advantage of everything the island had to offer.
Our room was spotless & comfortable.
The restaurant was great . The menu offered a wide selection of seafood & meat and everything we tried was delicious .In the morning, for inhouse guest only, they offered a buffet of hot & cold food as well as a few cooked to order selections.
We plan on returning to the Island Inn next year and hope to introduce other friends to this charming place.

We arrived on the afternoon boat, stepped off and strolled up the hill to be greeted in the Inn's lovely, low key reception room by Christa. From the moment we walked in, we were surrounded by smiling faces; guests, staff, passersby. We were shown our room, a clean, simple space with great views and lace curtains flapping in the sea air.
We could have simply fallen into a blissful slumber, except the 9 year old in our party needed to release some pent up energy, which he did by making and chasing paper airplanes( paper generously supplied at the Front Desk) and before long the there was a gaggle of children shrieking and letting we parents fall into easy conversation.
At dinner later, we smiled at new friends and ate some of the best food we’ve come across in a long while. Even though it was our first evening we felt like family.
After breakfast, ample and delicious, we were ready to take the staff suggestions and had a marvelous day, making it back for tea and thunderstorms form the porch.
From start to finish we were treated kindly, efficiently and professionally. We will be back

On Thursday August 8, 2008, my husband, 14 yr old son and my stepson and his family (wife and 2 small children) boarded the Balmy Days to stay the evening at the Island Inn. It was my sons birthday and he was so excited to be spending the night. We had booked 2 rooms in Pierce Cottage and paid in full over $658.00. There was a mix up. The Island Inn had our reservation for August 9, 2008. We had put the dog in the kennel, had our bags and 2 small children. Christa did have 2 rooms for the evening which she proceeded to offer to us at $430.00 (a discounted rate?) . My husband was appalled. She gave us no courtsey for a mistake (which we believe was the Island Inn's). All she wanted was to collect additional money and of course keep the deposit. $1000.00 for 2 small rooms with no bath and an uncompassionate host. We have been good customers for 25 years. So disappointed. I can not believe this is the way they treat customers. We will be staying at the Monhegan House in the future.

We stayed at the Island Inn on Monhegan for 2 nights recently. We had heard that Monhegan was a really special place. The Inn is one of the very few places on the tiny island to stay (and I think it may be the only one that offers accommodations with private bath) and it had been recommended by a friend, so we chose to stay there.

I was somewhat disappointed in the experience, though I think it is one of those things that just "is what it is." The front desk is friendly if not overly helpful. The inn reminds me of lakeside hotels in the Adirondacks--kind of boarding house style.

First the positives. The setting is very charming, just above the wharf in this tiny island community. There is a wide front porch with rocking chairs and also Adirondack chairs scattered across the lawn, both of which we enjoyed in the evenings. The breakfasts were extraordinary. Scrambled eggs with lobster are standard and perfectly cooked, and are accompanied by a wealth of other hot and cold options. Everything we tried was delicious.

But there were also negatives, and the hotel was not quite what I expected based on the website.

We stayed in a room with a private bath. I think maybe the rooms with baths are especially tiny as the baths were retrofitted into the space. But when I say tiny, I mean there was a bed and a small dresser, no closet, and virtually no room to walk around. We had a hard time even finding a place to put our bags where we wouldn't trip over them.

The bathroom was spartan, with a tiny stall shower, linoleum floors, and basic sink and toilet. The shower head was terrible, and it took me about 10 minutes to wash the shampoo out of my hair.

Sheets and towels were not only of very cheap quality but were also dingy and old.

The room was hot and no fan is provided, partly because of the limited electricity on the island. I would imagine rooms on the ocean side may get better breezes, but there wasn't a breath of air in ours, even on a breezy night.

The term "meadow view," used to describe the rooms at the back which cost less than the rooms at the front, is a bit euphemistic. Actually a fairly new cell tower dominated the view from the room.

You can hear everything that goes on in the hallways--people walking up and down, doors to rooms opening and closing, people walking to and from the shared baths.

Being objective, this hotel is not trying to be a luxury property, nor does it claim to be. But it was significantly more spartan than I expected for well over $200/night. If you can deal with a shared bath, I think you might be better off looking elsewhere.

Monhegan itself is charming and worth a trip. We arrived around 4pm on a Sunday and left on the 9am ferry Tuesday. It was the perfect amount of time. We enjoyed a drink on the lawn Sunday evening and dinner at the Inn. Monday we did the long hike around the perimeter of the island with some detours into the interior--the whole thing took about 4 hours. We had delicious lobster rolls for lunch and then ate a nice dinner at Monhegan House (another hotel) Monday night. By then we felt we had really seen the island and were ready to leave the next morning after another of those delicious Island Inn breakfasts.
