This was probably the 6th or 7th trip to Monhegan and the Island Inn. The staff is returns year after year and are always welcoming and friendly. The rooms are very clean and comfortable, although some are small. If you are looking for a resort atmosphere, don't even think about going to Monhegan! The island is simple, small, rustic, and absolutely magical. The dining room is very pleasant and serves a nice variety of meals, especially considering everything is imported from the mainland. The service is wonderful. This place is for introspection, working on art, reading, photography, bird watching, hiking and just general sitting and looking. The island has a lovely rhythm and we always manage to meet some interesting people. I almost hesitate to write a review because this place is so special I don't want to share! The Inn has neither AC or heat, so pack accordingly. Fluffy comforters keep you happy at night. It could be difficult for the mobility challenged as there are no elevators, you walk up the hill from the ferry dock, and trails are rough, but we've seen people rise to the challenge.

This was my first time staying over on Monhegan. A friend had chosen the Inn and we were not disappointed. The room we rented was twin meadows. No air conditioner but with the window open it was cool and comfortable during our stay. The staff all throughout the inn were all wonderful, helpful, knowledgeable about everything going on, what to see even the best sunrise and sunsets for the time of year we are in currently. Rooms were clean and comfortable, bathrooms even through shared were clean and never seemed to be a waiting line, wait staff in restaurant were wonderful, choices of food for meals were pleasing. I would recommend people to pay the extra money it costs to stay in a nice comfortable, friendly, Inn with a view.

Room Tip: No elevators so just remember that when staying. Rooms were quiet and we stayed on the meadow side...

This Inn (and Island) is like going back to a simpler place in time. In this fast paced world we live in, staying at the Island Inn is heaven on earth. Don't expect late nights and party time. This place is for wonderful forest walks, sitting on rocky cliffs, bird and seal watching, meeting great people and just getting back to nature. Oh, and eating great food. Don't forget to bring your own libations. It's all BYOB!! Everything at this Inn was top notch and unforgettable. Be prepared to share a bathroom but that was never a problem. Best views on the island and rocking on the porch is a must!

Now that we have a weekly rental we don't stay at the Island Inn as much as we used to but we come and eat in the dining room at least once each year and tonight was the night. Classics include succulent mussels in white wine sauce, a very good lobster bisque, and clam chowder that can also be had down at the ferry dock. They feature lobster and usually some pretty fine broiled halibut taken from local waters as well as seared scallops. Vegetarians may make several choices (the papardelle with fresh veggies are wonderful) and carnivores may enjoy filet mignon with lobster or by itself. The desserts continue to shine: blueberry pie made with tiny Maine blueberries, rhubarb crisp, warmed flour less cake, and creme brûlée round out the offerings. In August it can get a bit loud, but it's always worth coming for the food and art from a skilled local artist.

Room Tip: Corner rooms get a view of the meadow side and the sea side and have their own bathrooms, definitely...

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights on our whirlwind tour of the Maine Coast. We stumbled upon Monhegan Island through these message boards and are just so glad that we did. Monhegan Island is a gem of a place to visit. We loved every moment of solitude we spent on the island. There are not many "hotels" on the island, but the Island Inn is the first and largest you see. It has beautiful porches and expanses of lawn that overlook the harbor. It is a very old building with much character. The rooms are very clean, but sparsely decorated (which we loved- it just fit). Our room had a private bath, but you have to be sure to ask for that. Breakfast was included with the room rate. The restaurant also served lunch and dinner. We ate here several times and all of the meals were wonderful. You bring your own wine to dinner and they will serve it for you. It is a bit tricky to get to the island. We took the ferry from New Harbor. We had smooth seas (and a visit from a whale), but I can imagine it is a tough trip when the water is choppy. Our visit was a delight- loved every moment and inch of this beautiful secluded island.

Room Tip: Be sure to request a room with a private bath if that is important to you- not all of the rooms have...

My wife and I stayed one night in September. We arrived by ferry midday and our room was immediately available. We were asked upon check-in if we wanted dinner reservations. The only times available were after 9 pm. If we had been asked about this when making the reservation several months earlier, we would have sought a much earlier time in order to accommodate our daily medications. There were no other dining options on the island. Several of the menu items were no longer available by the time we were seated. Other guests should anticipate that dining can be a challenge.

Favorite Things at The Island Inn:
-sitting on the porch & rocking chairs looking at the harbor
-the community fridge, stored wine & food
-the breakfast, delicious!
-the service: friendly & knowledgable
-the decor, tasteful & cozy. New England done right.
-no televisions in the room

*one note: the rooms are small, but keep in mind it's a historic hotel and I don't think one goes to Monhegan to stay in a hotel room.
