“Charming & Comfortable”
Reviewed September 13, 2010

My husband & I just returned from a trip to Monhegan Island. It was our first trip there. We stayed at the John Sterling Harbor House, owned by Mark & Susan Finkin. We were greeted and extended a very warm welcome by Susan, who made us feel immediately at home. She showed us to our room, a very clean and cozy one, even a caligraphy written name tag on our door (a nice touch). The setting of this B & B we felt was the best on the island, as our room faced the harbor. The sound of the waves on the rocks and sea gulls was the best "white noise" to fall asleep and wake up to. The home was roomy and very clean. We enjoyed two beautiful breakfasts, blueberry pancakes, apple crisp & biscuits. Coffee was made available a hour before breakfast and beautifully served. Susan was accommodating and very friendly and helpful with our many questions about life on Monhegan. We loved the "Fish House", had as much lobster as we had time for, watching the most beautiful sunsets. We recommend the John Sterling Harbor House and thank Susan for her gracious hospitality.

The JSHH is in a perfect location and the view from our room was beautiful- overlooking the harbor and ocean. Susan was a gracious host and prepared us a delicious breakfast. The inn is clean and comfortable. As others have mentioned, it is on the rustic side but I think that adds to its charm. We look forward to visiting Monhegan again.

Loved the inn and stayed on it's more rustic side. It was well thought out, comfortable, and Marc the innkeeper went out of his way to make us comfortable. We highly recommend this, weather you wish to cook in, or dine out. Can't wait for next year for a repeat visit.

We stayed at the JSHH for one night at the end of June. The location was perfect - just steps from the dock, centrally located, with beautiful views of the island and the ocean. Susan was a lovely hostess and prepared a freshly cooked, still-warm out of the oven breakfast for us at the time of our choice on Sunday morning. Apple crisp (my personal favorite and the best I've had after my grandmother's apple crisp!), blueberry muffins, OJ, and coffee. On Sunday morning we checked out at 10 am, left our bags with Susan, and set out to do some hiking before our return ferry ride at 3 pm. Sadly, we got hit with a rainstorm and were forced to seek shelter in Carina's, one of the cafe shops on the island. As luck would have it, Susan came into the shop, took pity on us, and invited us to come back to the JSHH and hang out in the upstairs sitting room until our ferry ride, even though we'd already checked out. She even prepared us tea!

For the price, location, charm and great service of the JSHH, this place can't be beat!

Located near the harbor makes it great since it really is at the center of town and convenient to just about everything. That is really important since driving is not an option. The place is roomy and clean and the views are spectacular. The service is excellent and the breakfast was mouthwatering. A perfect way to start the day. Recommending John Sterling Harbor House to all my fellow travelers.

We love this place to stay on a beautiful remote island. Best place to stay especially with young kids. All the amenities and the owners are absolutely fantastic. We have stayed many seasons and can't wait to get back each year. Watch the boats, sunsets or take an easy stroll down to the dock. They have worked really hard at preserving this historic home and it is a privilegeto stay at the JSHH each time. Absolutely recommend them!

I have stayed at the JSH quite a few times. The location is beautiful and just a short walk from the wharf. The house is steeped in history and has been in the same family for years.

The managers/owners Mark and Susan are hospitable and helpful. This is one of the few cottages on the island that has many modern conveniences.
