Amazing views and great for hiking. Free entrance if you have a Maine number plate - even if you have hired the car. Ideal for moose peeping - Sandy Stream Pond is one of the best spot to see them swimming and running in the wild! I was there last October, just after Columbus day. If you want to admire the amazing fall foliage, go earlier - late September the latest. A truly great experience for nature lovers.

$14 bucks to get in, free if you have Maine license plate. You have to check in and check out @ trail heads. Hardly anyone there at the end of October. Ran into one frenchman and 2 french canadians. Saw 4 instances of moose. Couldn't have asked for a better day in nature.

White water rafting & driving in and around Baxter state park is truly amazing. Must visit! However, keep an eye out for black bears!

My husband, 2 young kids (7+3) and my brother went for the day. We ate at a day use picnic area, then hiked the Katahdin falls trail - my 3 year old made it about half way then we just played in the area - beautiful breathtaking views and a stream to watch. My brother took my 7 year old to the top of the falls trail and they had a great time - my son still talks about it and can't wait to go back next summer!

If you want a true wilderness experience, this is it. The road is unpaved, the speed limit is 10 or 20 (depending on where) and there are no restaurants, gas stations or wi-fi for most of the park. I couldn't even get cell reception. It was GREAT! Tons of hiking trails, most moderate. Wife has two artificial knees so most were off limits but for most people, very doable. Road is unpaved and one lane but didn't meet much traffic and only a few who seemed to think that it was a 25 mile long game of chicken. Didn't see any moose but we were there at the wrong time of day in a bad year. Could see that there were plenty of likely spots. If you leave the park and are going north on I95, stop at the scenic pull off about mile 254. Breathtaking!
