“What a Great Find!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 18, 2007

We set up a one night stay and spa treatments at the Portsmouth Inn and Spa for a belated Valentine's Day vacation.
Neither of us had been to a B&B or had spa treatments before, so we were taking our chances with this trip, but we hit the jackpot!
Nat and Lynn, the owners, were both very friendly and accomodating to our needs. Nat reminds me of a favorite relative who always makes sure you don't have to worry about going hungry, getting cold, having a bed to sleep in, etc. And Maya, their dog, loves to meet new people. Truly a family pet!
We stayed in the Minx room- very clean and victorian. I was almost afraid to leave the room in a mess. It had a small TV w/ VCR, a queen-size bed, large heater, ceiling fan, and a huge bathroom. The views were of the street and the spa entrance, but you could see straight across to the river and Warren's Lobster House, where we had dinner (an awesome find for you lobster-lovers out there. And if you go, don't forget to check out their desserts!).
In the morning Nat made an incredible breakfast that just hit the spot. He always had tea, and/or coffee waiting in the living room and cookies in the afternoon.
The spa staff was very friendly and put any qualms you had about spa treatments at ease. We experienced the couples swedish massage ( with hot stones for an added fee) and facials the next day. And anything you needed (water, reading material, local venues) , the staff was more than happy to oblige.
We are already planning a trip back in the summer when the weather warms up and the foliage is greener. But for anyone looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city or even the suburbs, check out the Portsmouth Inn and Spa.

I stayed here and absolutely loved it. I had a massage and really enjoyed the location. It is in a great location and the room I had was wonderful. It was at the top and overlooked the water. It isn't directly on the river but you can see the huge ships passing by in the distance.

  • Liked — The location and the room
  • Disliked — had to pay for wifi
  • Tips/Secrets — I ate at Warren's. It was overpriced. Would recommend to go someplace else to eat.

We stayed with friends at the Inn for one night in Oct 06. Our rooms were spacious, clean and comfortable with nice views across the river. The owners were very friendly and exceptionally helpful.

Breakfast was at a large communial table which worked well. The breakfast was two courses but no choice. The first course was excellent. The second was alright and certainly substantial but it would have been nice to know what was coming before it was served! The Inn at Portsmouth is one of the very few places in America that knows how to make a proper pot of tea which they did very well. They even had a choice of tea!

We stayed at the Portmouth Harbor for three nights and had a wonderfull time. The breakfast was very good and the innkeeper was friendly and attentive.
The Inn is centrally located for many activities and there is alot to do in the area. I would recommend the Inn.

  • Liked — Central location, the food
  • Disliked — The rooms could have been decorated better.

We live across the street from this B&B and have used it for a wedding and family and friends. It ranks 11 out of 10 for friendliness, access to Portsmouth across the bridge, great spa staff and breakfasts. Lynn and Nat Bowditch go out of their way to make the visitor's experience special. Plus, they have great neighbors!

excellent location, close to downtown porthsmouth, NH. extremely clean, and neat. Greated by Nat and his lab, Mia. Cookies and lemonade await you; nice touch. They handled the dinner reservations with recommendations. The a.m. breakfast was first class. You truly felt like you were at home. Nothing flamboyant or snooty...just down to earth people. We did not have a chance to use the spa, but others said it was great.
I would definitely recommend. Close to outlets (3 miles) and 1/2 mile to downtown Portsmouth, NH (walking distance)

My husband and I appreciated the wonderful welcome and kind hospitality shown us by Nat and Lynn. Nat's breakfast, and Lynn's cookies, were so delicious. We enjoyed spending time in the outdoor hot tub. The innkeepers' warmth and caring is what makes this a truly great B&B! Only negative, no air conditioning in the common rooms, very warm and uncomfortable, especially, when drinking hot coffee. Each individual room has a window unit, though.

We bought the B&B in May of 2004, and did not need air conditioning on the first floor that summer - here on the coast of Maine, heat and humidity to the extent of needing air conditioning are just not usual. However, in mid-July of 2005, we installed a room air conditioner in the dining room. We hope this will increase everyone's comfort.
