“great farm to table”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 13, 2013

Went with friends for my husband's birthday (his pick) his pork belly was to die for. We Ordered poutine with duck confit, mussels, lamb meatballs, and several other small plates. Great way to taste all they have to offer.

“Bold and Innovative menu”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 20, 2013

We took old friends (and Mainers) to the place on the recommendation of a waitress in another restaurant. They were familiar with the restaurant and like it alot. Small plate menu but not quite what we would call a tapas bar. Very different tastes and great drinks with a whiskey drink that I really liked (even though it was a hot night). Very young crowd (we are all in our mid to late 50's) but our friends were known to the owners who were omnipresent and working to help the staff serve the crowd. Vinyl records on turntables was a great touch (if a bit loud, but we are old). I recognized Roxy Music right away when the younger types did not. A wonderful evening. I picture the place in Williamsburg or Dumbo but it was great in Kittery

“Tasty and spicy in downtown Kittery.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 3, 2013

We tried Black Birch on the recommendation of our son who knows one of the partners and is a chef here. After finding the restaurant - there isn't a clearly visible sign on the outside of the building - we were seated at a community table with a very nice mother and daughter who reviewed the dishes they had just finished with us. They were very happy with both of their meals.

The atmosphere is eclectic and kind of haphazard, hard to describe, but certainly comfortable enough. There are only a few tables, they might sit 24-28 at a time, and some are shared, as ours was, and some are high tops which get moved around to accommodate the size of the party.

I had the lamb meatballs, a house specialty. They had a great flavor, but a very strong after burn. This was disappointing, and frankly uncomfortable. I don't like hot spicy food, but the menu said nothing about spicy or hot. Unfortunately the initial good flavor was ruined by the extended burn. It got worse, as it seemed that everything was made with gratuitous amounts of cayenne pepper. Even the baked beans.

While I won't be going back to Black Birch, if you like it hot, you should give it a try.

“Hate It OR Love it!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 28, 2013

This is a place that is easy to hate and love. It is very small and you sit almost on your neighbors lap and the interior is spartan. Hate It! It is hard to find. Hate it! Tables and chairs seem to be greasy! Hate it! Menu is eclectic and innovative. Love it! Hard to understand exactly what you are ordering as there are 4 classifications of dishes on the menu. Hate it! Some dishes look absurd but they work. Food is very good! Love all this!
Service is terrible since the kitchen is slow and appears to be confused. Management should clean the place up, expand and organize the kitchen and it would be outstanding. Waited for 40 minutes for an appetizer and an additional half hour for entree's. This is one of the few restaurants where my opinion changed several times before leaving.
Probably would not go back since shortcomings severely impact enjoyment of meal.

“Great Little Place, Hard to Find”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 18, 2013

We were looking for a place to eat and saw that The Black Birch had good reviews. Only one problem, we couldn't find it! Imagine our surprise when we realized we had parked the entire afternoon right next door to it. Let's just say it has zero curb appeal, no sign outside and honestly, we walked by it many times, never realizing that it was there! So be warned. BUT, once you step inside, what a difference. Great atmosphere, full of locals, lovely bar, good wine, great food, great service. Will definitely be back if we get the chance.
