“Always a Pleasure to Stay Here”
Reviewed July 15, 2010

We've been to the Nonantum quite a few times over the years. While it is not perfect, it has always been one of our favorite places to stay. We have stayed both within the Carriage House (main hotel) and the Portside. From the outside, the hotel is quite nice and the grounds are well kept. It' s location by the river flowing into the center of Kennebunkport is great! We use the pool, play a little shuffleboard, hang out in the Adirondack chairs, and play whiffle ball / catch / etc., while we are there. Inside the hotel lobby is nice as is the dining room. Otherwise, the guest rooms and the corridors leading to them show their age. Not dirty, but there is some peeling paint and they are really in need of an update. They do call themselves a "resort" but I guess I would call it more of an big, old, but still quaint hotel.

We've only eaten there for breakfast. They have a buffet breakfast that seems much better stocked during the weekend than during the week. This past week when we were there, we actually skipped the free breakfast to go out as we were disappointed from the previous day.

Other reviews might mention the plethora of wedding parties and such, and it seems every time we are there, another wedding party is rolling in or out. In all the times we have been there, we have not found them to be a bother. So yes, they are there, but I don't think they're a problem.

One of our favorite aspects of the hotel is that it is a relatively easy walk into the center of Kennebunkport, with shopping, restaurants, etc.

While my review might come across as somewhat negative, we really do have a pleasant time there and will keep returning.

we picked the nonantum resort from the magazine travel and leisure. They had a special package that looked very nice. When we got to the resort they gave us a room in the main building that was on the 3rd floor!!!!!! They have an elevator but its really a service elevator that you can't use to go up and down to your room. I think they should have told us this before we checked into our room. We changed rooms but they were not nice about giving us a break on the price. We had to pay more money for a room that at least had an ELEVATOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think a hotel should provide this information to its guests. I was very disappointed with the management.

I am very puzzled by this review. Both of our buildings have elevators. The one in our 127 year old Inn does require hotel personnel to operate it, but personnel are available 24 hours a day at the touch of a buzzer. Many people comment how charming it is to return to the days of chatting with the elevator operator!
The people who wrote this review were upgraded to a more expensive room at their request. Because they were upset that the room was more expensive, even though the move was at their request, we refunded the difference of the upcharge the day they left.
I would respectfully request this review be removed!

Pros: Nonantum resort has lovely grounds by the river. The common rooms are nice. Breakfast is good with a fair amount of variety. Staff is very friendly and helpful.

Cons: Some in our party couldn't sleep because of the noise from people walking above their room. Our room in the original building was a bit shabby considering the rate. It had lots of little problems that could be fixed in a day if someone wanted to such as: no coffee maker, thin shades that didn't block out the light, and a shower head that turned the water into a mist and made it hard to rinse off.

The newer rooms in the annex were better appointed but had a generic feeling.

I think the experience you have here will depend on the room you get.Our first night was spent in a room in the main building, and it was extremely small, with no view. The air conditioner was right by the head of the bed, and it was so noisy and cycled on and off all night. We didn't get much sleep because of it. The 2nd morning we asked to change rooms, and we were moved to a much larger and nicer room. The air conditioner was just as noisy though, but luckily since the room was bigger, it was located further away. The room was on the 4th floor and had a view of the river and ocean beyond. Our friends got a room on the 1st floor in the main building, and although the room was small, they had a nice patio to sit out on. We also saw a room in the Portside building(our friends moved to this room), and it was SO MUCH nicer. The room was updated, had a couch, small refrigerator and coffee maker. I would definitely request this building in the future.
The grounds of this resort are beautiful, and we enjoyed sitting in the Adirondack chairs overlooking the river and watching the boats. We took the lobster boat tour that leaves from there, and it was fun.
We enjoyed the included breakfast buffet. Our friends went to their restaurant for dinner and thought it was excellent.
Staff were extremely helpful and friendly. I would definitely stay here in the future, but this time in the Portside building.

Got a deal using Zoo Promotions. The third floor, king room had a view of the water and was very nicely decorated. It was roomy. The floor did creak and could hear adjoining rooms. The included breakfast was very good (not just your typically continental fair). The manager that checked us in was very pleasant and allowed us to check in early. Sge explained everything to us about the hotel, our included amenities and the area. Would highly recommend via a discounted package.

My sister's and I planned a weekend get-a-way for our Mother's 80th birthday. From the time we made the reservation the reservation staff was full of excitement over what we were planning. When we arrived at the hotel that evening our beds were turned down with a delicious piece of chocolate on each pillow and a small wrapped box and note card on the end of the bed. This was a handwritten note from the staff of Nonantum - wishing our Mother a Happy 80th Birthday and the box was a box of assorted chocolates. My Mother and my sisters and I were so blown away at the superb customer service. My Mother felt so special that they recognized her birthday. Our room was beautiful. We stayed in the Portside Lodge, with a terrace overlooking the ocean. The room was very clean, decorated very tastefully, and the beds were very comfortable. We relished the quaintness of the hotel and the true beauty of the surroundings. The breakfast buffet was divine. There were a lot of choices and all the food was tasty and filling. A great way to start the day. The concierge, Mary, was a terrific source of information. She offered suggestions for a Sunset Cruise on the Pineapple Ketch sailboat, which was truly a highlight of our trip. Mary also suggested and made dinner reservations for us at Pier 77, which was also a lovely dinner and memorable evening. If I were ever in Kennebunkport again I would definitely stay at Nonantum Resort.
