The B&B was terrific, beautiful rooms, wonderful host and delicious breakfast. Unfortunately, the season doesn't start until mid-April. Many of the restaurants were closed and most of the stores. We couldn't even get a lobster dinner. I would highly recommend the Inn, IN SEASON.

Room Tip: For New England charm choose the Inn.

I want to thank the people who own and work at the MSI.It was an exceptional stay from start to finish. They have paid attention to the quality a B+B of this place deserves.
We stayed for 3 days and looked forward to the breakfast they prepared every morning.Excellent!!
We went in the off season so a large # of buisnesses are closed until after Easter, but every place we dined had really good food.
I must say,try the Maine Diner if you want the best Seafood Chowder you will ever have.Loaded with seafood, and the broth is great.Didn't try the lobster pie,but heard that was just as good.
Glad we choose the MSI,and we met a few interesting couples at the breakfast table too.
Highly recommend Maine Stay Inn

Every winter we spend a weekend away to celebrate our anniversary. We visited Maine Stay for the first time three years ago and cannot imagine a better place to celebrate! Whether we stay for one night or two, the hospitality of the inn-keepers and staff is always exceptional. They are very accommodating and we love just checking in/out so we get a chance to chat with them. One of us is a vegetarian and one of us is gluten-free - a combination usually lethal at most hotels/B&Bs/restuarants. Here at Maine Stay they totally understand both diets (they have a family member who is also gluten-free!) and are more than willing to modify their delicious breakfasts to help us out. We always miss tea time, but I know last year they made a point to bake a gluten-free cookie for us! Beyond the breakfasts, they must have databases memorized in their heads for local food and attractions. Ask for skiing and they will quickly give you two or three options, gluten-free restaurants with vegetarian options? They have about five recommendations. Fun things to do in Kennebunkport? The list is too long to count. Always helpful, always courteous and always charming.

So far we have stayed in three different cottages and have loved each of them for their own reasons. The cottages are always quiet (great sound-proofing!), bright and sunny, and very cozy. The decor is very pretty. Each cottage is slightly different, but none of them have cheesy or tacky decorations. The cottages are definitely a home away from home and we always find ourselves asking if we could possibly stay just one more night... The rates are manageable, especially in the off season. Where else can you stay at a private - non-hokey cottage with a fireplace and jacuzzi tub for less than $300/night?

There are one or two other reviews about the inn keepers at Maine Stay that are less than favorable. This has NOT been our experience. In fact, when we arrived for our most recent visit Judi gasped and seemed so excited to see us. She almost jumped out of the little office area to say hi! Walter gave us the tour of our room, showed us how things worked and then gracefully excused himself. The other office staff and cleaning staff are always positive, helpful and engaging. Everyone greets you with a smile.

The last thing I think worth mentioning is that we are a gay couple and neither the inn keepers or their staff has blinked an eye at us or ever given the impression that they even noticed. Sometimes small New England towns are less than welcoming/accepting, but Judi and Walter treat us like two nieces!

Maine Stay Inn and Cottages has become our second home, the one place we find the most welcoming and inviting when we are not in our hometown. I know it sounds a little too good to be true, but it really is a little slice of heaven. I am already counting down until next year and trying to figure out if we can visit again before Thanksgiving!

Room Tip: My best tip is that the pictures on their website are accurate - so go with the room you like the mo...

I stayed at this Inn during its off season and was satisfied with my stay. It is a beautiful old house with cottages surrounding it providing extra rooms.
Let me start by saying the Inn Keepers definitely do care about their guests. We had specific needs for our trip and they were more then accommodating upgrading our room because the rooms we wanted were taken. free of charge!
When we arrived we were warmly greeted by Cathy. She was very nice and helpful in finding us a place to eat. She also did a wonderful job showing us to our room and showing us how everything worked. ( fireplace hot tub ) Apparently it was only her second week on the job as-well! great job Cathy!
My room was very clean and seemed to be well taken care off except one of the chairs in the kitchen area was semi broken i think. The bathroom was very clean and they even folded the toilet paper roll. However the roll seemed to be half used already when we got there, this could be a turn off for some people.
I was also put off and a bit shocked that housekeeping left our door unlocked one afternoon. We made extra sure to keep our door locked when we left. They may not have been done in our room because they left a Windex bottle but it still seemed unprofessional.
The food was pretty good considering they have to cook for numerous guests, definitely put effort into being creative about the gourmet breakfasts each day but i didn't get the feeling they put everything they could have into the breakfasts. I think they were better cooks then we got to experience that particular weekend, not saying our meals weren't good or great even! They also offer complimentary tea and cookies and a cheese plate witch was nice.
Overall id say you get what you pay for at this Inn. Its very beautiful and the Innkeepers and staff are warm and friendly the price is right and the accommodation are right just do not expect to be staying at a five star hotel. Its a bed and breakfast after all!

Staying at a bed and breakfast is certainly a different experience than staying at a five star hotel and if one is thinking about making the choice between the two it is important that the differences are clearly understood. A bed and breakfast provides a warm and casual homelike atmosphere where a hotel is a bit more impersonal and businesslike. However, there is one way that bed and breakfast’s and the finer hotels are alike is that both are trying to be environmentally friendly. Here at the MAINE STAY INN & COTTAGES we pride ourselves on trying to be kind to our planet. We leave a note stating that if you would like clean towels everyday please leave the towels on the floor and we will gladly change them. We recycle all of our soaps and send them to Haiti to be melted down and used again by people who appreciate them. The staff is trained to change the toilet paper rolls when they are less than 1/4 full. In addition, there is always a new roll in the bathroom if our guests feel the need to change them. Please know that we are very concerned about the large number of trees being cut down to make paper. Another difference are our breakfasts which are always included in the stay. A full hot entrée is served daily and I am glad the guests noticed our creative, gourmet breakfast even though we did not fulfill their dreams.

We appreciate the notice that the chair was unstable and today we had our maintenance man fix the problem in a few minutes. The safety of our guests is most important and we try to make ourselves open and available if there is any problem at all. In fact we are happy when our guests alert us about anything that would potentially cause an accident. If my staff left a guest door unlocked I am truly shocked as this is stressed over and over again. Unfortunately, I have no recourse with the staff at this point, because a variety of workers might have been in that room on that day. If I had been told of this problem immediately, I would have addressed the seriousness of this mistake with the appropriate employee.

I am glad this guest enjoyed the beauty of our property and I wish we had taken their breath away.

When we arrived after a long travel and day of skiing, we were greeted by someone who first looked at her watch and then asked if she could help us. This woman was polite and attempted to be helpful finding a place to eat, but seemed like it was her first day on the job, not knowing where keys were and seemed flustered that they were out of cookies and on how everything worked in our room (the little gas fireplace could only be plugged into a certain outlet or the fuse would blow). After being shown our room in this big empty house, we asked if we could have a room with a jacuzzi tub... the 2 innkeepers and the receptionist all looked at us as if we were crazy and then sarcastically said "well ya, but it will cost ya extra!" The next morning at breakfast the innkeeper told the group of us at breakfast on more than one occasion how much she disliked the "business" of b+b's. She complained about other guests who asked for special dishes due to allergies and complained about having to be there early to serve breakfast.
The Inn was beautiful and clean, the food was delicious, but the hospitality was less than pleasant.

As an innkeeper, one of the best things about each day is getting to meet new people and have the opportunity to make them feel welcome, relaxed, and, yes, a little bit pampered. But occasionally we encounter people who are disgruntled before they even set foot in our door, which is unfortunately the case here. These instances leave us to wonder if the couple had an argument in the car or were simply overtired and due for a good dinner, but we always make a special attempt to brighten their spirits. Because Kennebunkport is a quaint village and not a city, options for dining late in the evening can be limited, so when these visitors arrived at 9 pm, our front desk staffer did indeed check her watch - in an attempt to determine where she could recommend that they dine. These visitors also made their reservation through a travel website, not with the Maine Stay directly, and had selected the least expensive room on the property, which does not have a gas fireplace like many of our rooms and suites. However, an electric fireplace was recently added (which does utilize a designated electrical circuit) to bring extra ambience to those traveling on a budget. When they enquired about jacuzzi tubs, it became clear that they did not understand that each room had unique amenities, and as a result, a different rate. So was there a difference in price between our most simple room and our most luxurious suite? Yes, and that can sometimes be a challenge for traditional hotel-goers to embrace.

Often during breakfasts guests express their curiosity about innkeeping and how reality might differ from sitcoms and novels, which is something we're always happy to talk about, because that's when we can share some of our funniest stories! Now, there certainly are aspects that each of us dislike (like Walter hating laundry!), but the best part is having a team that so beautifully complements one another, enjoying the parts that others find challenging. Getting up each morning and socializing with fun new people over breakfast is the best start to a day, and it is a shame that this reviewer only saw the negative in that day's conversation.

We just returned from a one night "Groupon" getaway weekend and it was wonderful. From the moment we arrived, we were treated like family. We drove in during a winter storm and Judi made sure we were immediately comfortable and seated by a fire. She then presented us with homemade cookies, tea and coffee. Our room was clean, cozy and relaxing. We stayed in Abbie's Retreat. The whirlpool tub was so relaxing and we enjoyed our cheese platter with cheese, crackers, biscotti and fruit. We enjoyed a lovely dinner at Gressini's and loved the beautiful winter wonderland all around us! Shopping at the outlets in Kittery and poking in the little shops in Kennebunkport rounded out our stay. So happy to have discovered this Inn and we plan to be back with our family in tow next time. Special thanks to Judi for all of the parenting advice!!!

I can't believe that it has been a week since we left the Maine Stay Inn. We were supposed to arrive by 3:00 on Tuesday afternoon, February 11, 2013, but were delayed due to a water leak in our basement. When I called the Maine Stay Inn to inform them that we would be arriving about 6 that was not an issue at all. When we arrived in Kennebunkport, it was dark out, but the B&B had sufficient lighting outside. I walked up onto the front porch to the original doors of this beautiful home, built about 1860 as a private residence by a merchant sea captain named Melville H. Walker. The doors have the original starburst crystal glass windows, just stunning. When I walked inside & observed the ornate carved mantles & molding in the rooms, I was awestruck. It was as if I had walked back in time. I can certainly understand why this home was added to the National Register of Historical Places. I met Brian at the front desk & he was so helpful in making us feel invited & welcomed. He told us that breakfast would be served about 9:00 in the dining room and he went over the local map and area restaurant locations of Federal Jacks, Allisons & Bandaloop. Complimentary coffee & tea was available at any time in the reading room & we could help ourselves. Also, homemade chocolate chip cookies were on the table & I readily ate the cookie with the cup of tea that Brian had made me. He gave us a code for the front door security lock so if we were out late we could let ourselves in. We were led to our room located at the top of the winding stairs, room 17, newly renovated was like a garden room, bright & cheery with flowered wall paper. A plate of cheese, fruit & crackers with a bottle of chilled sparkling cider was delivered to us in our room. The bathroom had a whirlpool tub which we so enjoyed. What a perfect two day getaway for us. My husband enjoyed watching the tv as he layed upon the king sized bed which was so comfortable. I called him the "princess & the pea", he was so relaxed. In the morning we went downstairs after a very restful night, to have breakfast. Judi the owner of the B&B was so attentive to us along with being full of life & information about the inn. Breakfast was indeed gourmet and delicious both mornings. If I understood the history & background of the B&B, Judi & her husband Walter, I believe, are the 12th owners of the property since it was built over 150 years ago. During our breakfast we met a couple from Massachusetts & a couple from Rhode Island and so enjoyed the conversations at the table. The weather was beautiful, in the 30's during the day, plenty of sunshine. Lots of areas we could walk to. I can't say enough positive things about the Maine Stay Inn & the owners. We really enjoyed our stay & look forward to going back in the near future. I recommend to anyone, it is worth the stay. Judi & Walter, thank you for sharing your home with us & we will be back. Try not to work so hard, but because of your dedication & hard work, you have a "jewel" that so many people can enjoy and & actually relax in.

Room Tip: We were in Room 17, which is upstairs on the second floor at the back of the building on the left ha...
