Reviewed June 19, 2012

We stayed at the Captain Lord Mansion B&B in late May for 3 nights -- and it was easy to feel at home here. Our welcome was warm, the house was absolutely beautiful, the grounds were lovely, and the neighborhood equally historic and lovingly cared for. We stayed in The Mary Lord room, with a 4-poster bed, gas fireplace, sitting area, and fine artwork. The bathroom was large, with double porcelain standing sinks and shower with built-in sauna and multiple massage heads, and a heated tile floor. Yep, it was pretty comfortable! We also enjoyed the breakfasts in the kitchen with the other guests and our chefs. There were several courses, all which were delicious. They accommodate dietary restrictions very well if you give them enough notice (we let them know a week prior to our arrival). Everything was flawless. Kennebunkport is much smaller than we thought, which made it all the more charming. And we were there in the shoulder season, so it wasn't touristy or crowded. We took day-trips down the coast to York, Ogunquit, Perkins Cove, Nubble Light House, and quite a few awesome beaches. Loved the historic villages and well-preserved architecture of the area. And everyone we met were friendly and loved to share experiences.

Dear Denver, Thank you for your positive review of our inn. We appreciate your mentioning our willingness to accommodate dietary needs. If a guest lets us know their needs, even at check-in, we can usually meet those needs and do so cheerfully. We also appreciate your comments about how easy Kennebunkport is to visit; it is small, but with tremendous charm and lots of activities squeezed into a small area! Our inn is located within easy walking distance (less than one third of a mile) of most of those activities. However, our location in the quiet residential historic district means guests have a peaceful place to relax. We look forward to your return visit. Sincerely, Rick Litchfield, Innkeeper

All the rooms at this location are wonderful. We stayed in The Garden House, which only has four rooms. We vacationed with two other couples. The fourth room stayed vacant, so it felt like the entire house was ours. We sat on the screened-in porch every afternoon. We also felt like we had our own personal chef, who cooked us a wonderful three course breakfast each morning. Even for a bed & breakfast, the morning meal was truly over the top. The chef's name was Holly. She was another reason why this stay was so special. Her personality was so warm & outgoing. We actually asked her to sit & have breakfast with us. She very sweetly declined, saying she could get in trouble for doing that.

Dear Long Island, First, Thank you for your positive review. Your group experienced a Kennebunkport visit the way many small groups traveling together do, by selecting to stay at the Captain's Garden House. You had the whole house to yourselves together with your own breakfast cook/innkeeper. Thank you for mentioning Holly and her warmth and hospitality. She has been with us over 10 years and truly loves her guests and serving them. If you are contemplating coming to Kennebunkport with a group of four couples, we believe there is no better place to stay than the Captain's Garden House with its amenities and closeness to town. Sincerely, Rick Litchfield, innkeeper

We're not usually BnB people but I didn't mind hauling bags up 3 flights here. The Americana room had a shower wedged in a small closet and a great jaccuzi in a large bathroom. The bed and linens were comfortable and climate control was perfect. The breakfasts are grand - if you do the 945 seating you won't be hungry til dinner. Lots of sights are within 2mi walking or biking. We ate with a couple on their 7th visit. I see why.

Dear Waco, Thank you for your positive review. We do have a young man who carries luggage for guests; he works most days from 2:30 pm until about 6:00 pm. Thanks for mentioning the climate control too; the Americana room and two others on the third floor just received new individually controlled ceiling A/C units. These rooms have been very comfortable during this heat wave. We hope you'll return soon. Sincerely, Rick Litchfield, Innkeeper

This is our 11th visit to the inn. My husband and I love the inn and all the new special touches they've recently added. The new coffee machine and chocolate wine every evening was a real treat. The staff is the best we've ever encountered! Looking forward to our return trip at Christmas.

My husband and I stayed at the CLM to celebrate our 5 year wedding anniversary. Neither of us had ever been to Kennebunkport and we don't usually stay in B&Bs. We had an amazing time. The CLM is beautiful. We stayed in the Cactus Room it was very clean and has the most comfortable bed. We were lucky enough to come in on the last day of the Kennebunkport festival and were able to participate in the Historic Inn Wine tasting among the 8 Inns. What an experience touring the other Inns, meeting the Innkeepers and drinking wine. We met so many nice people that day. Another plus for us is it happened to be President Bush Sr's B-day celebration weekend so we were able to see the aircraft carrier and watch President Bush Sr be flown back to the compound.
Breakfast at the CLM is amazing. Sue is so nice and a wonderful cook. The experience of dining with the other people staying at the Inn was fantastic. We met some very lovely people from all different parts of the country.
If you are looking for a great place to escape I highly recommend the CLM. You can plan a packed day of sightseeing or just sit back and relax with a good book on the side lawn where they have hammocks, loungers and chairs.
The location of the Inn is perfect. It is close to everything and just a few minute walk into town.
Thank you CLM for a great get away. We look forward to coming back next year.
PS - hope the wine tasting/Inn tour is an annual thing.

Dear Marshfield, Thank you for your glowing review. Yes, the Kennebunkport Festival was a great success. It was the first year the Historic Inns of Kennebunkport did their "Garden Parties". We plan to repeat it next year. We are already doing the planning. Additionally, thank you for your comments about our staff. We hope to see you again for next year's Festival! Your innkeeper, Rick Litchfield

I have been to many top notched B & B's all over the world. The Captain Lord Masion was very nice. The room we were in was decorated with a lot of color. However we had a few complaints;
The bathroom was very small...and I mean very small. The toilets (at least in our room) needs to be replaced with a larger toilet...preferable a elongated toilet. Climbing in and out of the tube shower combo unit was difficult.
The Inn's grounds are extremely well maintained. The breakfast was good but not great. We stayed at the Inn based on the reviews... Maybe we would have been treated differently had we stayed in the main house as we were in the Garden house. The service was good, however we felt like we're just another guest...usually at high end B&B's the owners go out of there way to make adjustments. The inn was sold out during our stay and we were not able to move into the main house which might have made our stay more enjoyable. The location was excellent and it was an easy walk into town.

Dear Miami, Thank you for your review and for bringing to our attention the situation with the toilet in the Nathaniel Room. We replaced that toilet with a new elongated "comfort height" one today. We are sorry that you felt that your weren't treated to your expectations. We sincerley apologize for that. Our employees that staff the Captain's Garden House get many compliments on their service and hospitality. We will review your comments with them and redouble our efforts to make every guest feel special. If we had other rooms available the night you were here and had been aware of your dissatisfaction, we would have gladly moved you to the main inn. Your innkeeper, Rick Litchfield

This is our third stay here & we love to return. Stayed in Merchant suite which is always wonderful!! Loved the new TV but missed the waterfall shower. They also have new Nespresso machine with milk froth that was excellent. CLM has every little extra possible in a B&B that makes it a very special place!!

Dear Rhode Island, Thank you for your multiple visits and your fine review. We are pleased that you like the additions of the Nespresso machine and "pop-up" large-screen TV in the Merchant suite. When we removed the waterfall shower in that room, we added the multiple-jet body shower. We hope you liked that new feature. The old shower was totally worn out and was not representative of the quality that we strive to maintain! We really were sorry to have to redo that shower! We look forward to your next visit. Your innkeeper, Rick Litchfield
