Took the family (wife and 10 year old) on the Rugosa. The boat is a mahogany planked 38 footer, built in 1961. She's a real beauty. It sails from the picturesque Nonantum Resort on the Kennebunk River. I can't say enough about the excursion! The Captain and crew welcomed us aboard. They were cheerful and seemed genuinely happy that we were on board. We had a million questions, and they patiently and pleasantly answered them all. They go over all the safety info that is required, and then head out, down the river and into the ocean. On the way out, they talk about lobsters and the lobster industry's history. Very informative. Once in the ocean, they demonstrate how the lobstermen find their pots and haul them aboard. Then they let the passengers band the claws of the catch, and everyone gets to handle a live lobster, even the kids. The scenery on the trip is beautiful, and you'll get a view of the Bush residence there in Kennebunkport. Bottled water was provided for anyone that needed to be quenched.
I'd recommend this tour to anyone visiting the area that has a couple of hours to spare. The trip was fun and educational for the kids, and even for us "old salts".
