We have stayed at the Rhumbline Resort many times over the years. It's a great spot to go for a quiet winter weekend. The summer with the outdoor pool and bar is really great. The lobster bakes are the best in town. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. The resort grounds are a perfect place for kids to play in a very safe area.
The price is a great bargin for the area. The rooms are are very nice and clean.
The best place to stay in southern Maine. Wouldn't think of any other place to stay.

What used to be a nice, simple, clean, family-friendly resort, is now a run-down, depressing motel. We stayed there in 1995, and again in 1997, and had pleasant experiences both times. So we didn't believe the negative reviews we read here, and booked a stay last summer. It was quite unpleasant. Our room was dark, damp, and smelly. The mattress appeared to be at least 20 years old, and was lumpy and stained. I left my family -- who, unlike me, after years of camping can sleep anywhere -- and slept in my car in the parking lot. (Much to the concern of the poor Secret Service agents who are housed there when the Bush family is in town). We checked out early and moved to the Hilton Garden Inn in Portland, which was clean and comfortable.

We've stayed at the Rhumbline for a few days every summer when travelling through Maine. I'm afraid that over the years it's really gone downhill. We liked it because it's kid-friendly and has an indoor and outdoor pool. Also, it's very affordable compared to the other hotels in Kennebunkport. But, this last time was truly awful. First they tried to put us in a room right next to the ice machine which was obviously not working right because it sounded like a truck idling. We got a different room, away from the noise, but it smelled, the carpet and bedspread were horribly stained, the 1960s style beds were falling apart, the toilet backed up, and the the shower head broke. The indoor pool and jacuzzi were closed because of plumbing problems. The outdoor pool was filthy and the outdoor jacuzzi has broken tiles and is on its last legs. The outdoor area used to have some charm, but now it's just overgrown and unkempt. One night we stupidly ordered some food (just a couple hot dogs) from the outdoor bar and restaurant and waited an hour. Really. One hour with two hungry kids. I'm afraid we'll have to find another place to stay now. Any suggestions?

Really bad hotel. Worst we stayed at during a tour of the east coast. Cheap on everything, poor service. Really crummy rustic rooms, poor bowing beds. Everything has an old, tacky feel.
Trailer home feel with breakfast we never at at despite being there for 4 nights.(couldn't find another place to go to).(went for a wedding - everyone else of the wedding party felt the same)

Stay outside of Kennebunkport or at a nicer bread and breakfast.
Worse than a Motel 6 (no kidding).

The audacity to charge $1.50 for each person for room service must stem from the fact NO ONE in there right mind would want to tip or be grateful for the service or room.

This the only review I have ever posted despite travelling extensively for over 20 years. (Feelings are strong).

Everyone there is friendly, the area is nice and clean. Granted the rooms are slightly small, but for the money its worth it. The area is nice.

Upon seeing rave reviews on this site of the Rhumbline I never dreamed it would be what it was. It bills itself as a luxury motel with a deluxe continental breakfast. First of all, the owners are NOT friendly. I never actually raised my opinion with them...just saw them drinking at the hot tub the were snobby to the guests and overly friendly with their friends. When we entered our room....I felt like I was entering an old mobile home! The floor had that feel...the floor was also slanted. It was a non-smoking room and reaked of smoke. Very old nasty carpet...very old bathroom. The shower head was about to fall off. Oh, they also let you know they will be charging you for your convenience 1.50 extra per person per room for the maids! The luxury continental breakfast was no more than a cereal and a few muffins. DO NOT expect anything! Their staff person would come down to the breakfast room and never smile or say hello to anyone. They brag that people that work for Pres Bush go there...well, they use the indoor pool because it is the only one in town. That's the other reason we went there.... don't bother!!!!!! This place affected my time in Kennebunkport.

Stayed for one night, but was impressed with area and staff. Wish we had checked earlier about the Lobster bake, because we ate before arriving and they had the bake that night. One lady said they come every year, call to make reservations for the Lobster bake and enjoy several days there.
