“A Wonderful Experience”
Reviewed August 16, 2013

We have visited this area several times and never stayed at the Inn. We're glad that we gave it a try and look forward to visiting again. I know how important initial impressions can be and so does Cheryl and the rest of the staff. We were greeted with genuine warmth and good humor. I was a little "cranky" due to traffic issues getting into town and was a bit grumpy when we finally arrived. Cheryl wouldn't let me get away with a thing and soon had me laughing and realizing that it was time to "chill and enjoy." She gave us the scoop and showed us to our room which was really very clean and very comfortable. The brunch was excellent and drinks on the patio in the evening was a joy. We were given a beach pass in the morning with complimentary bottles of water for the beach. We asked for dinner recommendations which were on target and much appreciated. We look forward to visiting again.

Dear Luvtotravel:

Greetings and "thank you" for sharing that you recently had a wonderful experience at the Inn. We are glad that you gave the Kennebunkport Inn a try and that your expectations and vacationing needs were met. It is often the people that we encounter while on vacation that can make or break our experiences... You are right about Cheryl, our General Manager!... She is second to none when it comes to establishing positive relations with all guests and by her wonderful example, expects her staff to do the same! As you've stated, she most certaily brings cheer and warmth to our Inn... Thank you for recognizing her as a compliment like this from guests is the highest compliment of all! :-),

Finally, we're glad you had the chance to "chill and enjoy", and that you liked your room, brunch, and drinks on the patio. We look forward to your next visit and we promise to make sure that Cheryl is here to make you laugh! :-)

My stay at the Kennebunkport Inn was a mixed bag to sum it up. The front desk upon registration was polite, professional, showed us the main patios and dining rooms with a mini walking tour and was a great way to start our visit. The common areas such as the main patio were great with good service during happy hour in the afternoon and in the evening around the fireplace.Breakfast was excellent each morning. Now the bad.The size of our room was cramped and smelled stuffy like it had not been aired out all summer. The air condictioner was noisy and would make sleeping difficult at times. There was the constant drone of knats that drove my wife to distraction. We were on the first floor of the river house and found the ceiling/floor above us hardly able to surpress the people moving around in their room at one in the morning again disturbing our sleep in harmony with the AC. The location of the inn was great as we could leave our car in the parking lot instead of jockeying for a scarce spot downtown.I can only find fault in the room we stayed in as the services of the inn were very good which is why I gave it an average rating.

Room Tip: Was told by fellow guests that the rooms at the main inn were bigger, quieter, and a better option t...

Dear mal34:

Thank you for your recent Trip Advisor review. We appreciate hearing that you considered the Front Desk staff to be polite and professional. We're also pleased that you had good service during Happy Hour, enjoyed breakfast, and were able to cozy up to our lovely fireplace on the outside deck.

We are sorry to hear that your room did not meet your expectations and certainly wish that we would have known while you were here, as we would have worked to remedy some of your concerns... You are correct in stating under "Room Tips" that there are other rooming oprtions here at the Inn! We have a variety of "Federal" and "Mansion" rooms that we would love for you to try when you return to the area! Most of these rooms are spacious, and our mansion rooms all have in-room fireplaces.

Should you wish to discuss your recent stay with us any further, please feel free to call us at 1-207-967-2621. We would love to hear from you! :-)

There are many great things that could be said about the experience offered by the Kennebunkport Inn. The room was comfortable and clean. The bed, while not being our own, allowed us to quickly fall asleep and wake rested. The location was great, especially to my wife who loves to browse and see the local offerings. The entire downtown area was a few steps from the front door of the inn. The included free breakfast was good, the porch where we ate breakfast was spectacular. The porch was also a comfortable place to spend some evening time with a warm fireplace and infrared heaters to displace the chill of the evening. The staff, however, were the difference between a great and excellent experience. The front desk staff were friendly and helpful. My wife loves steamers and we were having problems finding them at the restaurants we had visited. We asked Jill at the front desk and not only did she know of a place, but called them to insure that they were available today. One of the staff who was working on some maintenance projects was very willing and helpful, providing hex wrenches allowing me to make adjustments to my bicycle. After we checked out they were still accommodating providing us with the beach pass so we could have one last walk on the beach before leaving. We will be back.

Dear Vincent P:

Greetings! We appreciate your most recent complimentary review and that you'd share that you had "many great experiences" while here at the Inn! We are pleased to hear that you found your room to be comfortable and clean, and that it offered you and your wife a good night's sleep. It is also great that you took advantage of our "spectacular" porch, including the incredible fireplace at night. Our cozy fireplace is certainly wonderful for Maine's cooler nights!

Thank you, also, for mentioning Jill from our Front Desk Team. She is, in fact, so helpful to all of our guests and we're lucky to have her here! She certainly does go "above and beyond"...

We are glad that you intend to come back to stay with us! PLease visit us again soon! :-_

The Kennebunkport Inn is a bit of an enigma. It has two personalities. One is a small hotel, the other a motel, but neither an inn. We were booked into a wharfside room initially. This was a separate building, away from the main inn and very much like a motel rather than the inn we were expecting. The room was quite basic and plain but worst of all the walls are paper thin, so you can hear every noise in the next door room. We had a family with a young child and we didn't get much sleep. The next morning we mentioned that we weren't happy and to their credit they found us a room in the main building. This was much nicer and while next to the outdoor patio dining area, still quieter than our first room. The main building is very pleasant and quite large, with a bar and restaurant, so more like a small hotel than the other inn's we have stayed at in New England, which tend to be small, quiet and cosy and only serve a home cooked breakfast. So in summary I would say forget the wharfside rooms unless you sleep like a log and think of the inn as a pleasant, small hotel. Lastly they do offer the free use of old fashioned back pedaling bikes, which are a great way to find your way around Kennebunkport. My rating scores are based on our second, improved room.

Room Tip: Avoid wharfeside rooms

Dear Simon B.:

Greetings! Thank you for your recent Trip Advisor post. We are sorry to hear about your personal experiences in our Wharfside building, but pleased to hear we could move you to the main Inn where you found your room to be satisfactory. The wharfside building certainly has a different flair to it compared to the historic Inn, but many guests do like it for its "summer cottage" feel... Having both the Wharfside building and the main Inn certainly has allowed us over the years to appeal to a variety of needs of our traveling guests... Again, we are pleased that we were able to find you accommodations that you could enjoy. :-)

We are also happy to hear that you took advantage of our complimentary bikes. They are certainly a fun way to explore Kennebunkport.

Thank you for staying with us and we look forward to seeing you again in the future!

Spent two nights here last week on our way to a slightly longer stop in Bar Harbor. The Inn, staff, and food were terrific, and the adult beverages were delightful out on their porch and deck area. The convenience of a downtown location made getting around without having to drive a huge bonus, particularly given the high demand for parking in the Dock Square area. It was an easy walk out to the public beach (although transport was offered if we wanted or needed it) and all of the galleries, shops, and dining you could want were even closer. The room was beautifully appointed, good sized, and appointed with all of the usual nice quality touches you would expect in a first class facility. Entertainment in the evening in the lounge was lively and great fun. We plan to return a soon as our schedule permits. The only place they lost rating points was in the limited parking available when the Inn is full, which I expect is most of the time during the summer.

Room Tip: We and our friends both had second floor suites, which were spacious and very comfortable. In peekin...

This is the second year in a row that our family stayed at the Kennebunkport Inn. With 7 adults and 5 kids, we were a fairly large group.

To avoid crowding, we occupied 2 regular rooms and 2 suites, which the inn has across the street from its main building. The latter served us very well, especially #400, a 2-bedroom suite with living room, dining area, and a dramatic screened-in porch overlooking the Kennebec River from the second floor.

Everything was good, especially the very helpful management including Manager Cheryl and Asst. Mgr. Kim, wonderful hosts who went out of their way to assist us with dinner reservations, local information, suggestions about what to do, etc.

We also made use of the newly-refurbished pool with a snack bar at a sister property about 2 minutes drive away.

This is really a family-friendly place.

Room Tip: Just explain your needs to the staff.

This lovely property is located smack dab in the center of Kennebunkport, so it's a walk outside the resort to get to restaurants, shops, etc. It also sits on the river, so you can eat your morning complimentary breakfast out on a high boy overlooking the water. Oddly enough, it is incredibly peaceful despite its street location.

We loved the place, the staff and service. However, the room we were assigned to the first night was more than underwhelming. It was small, tired, had a tight shower--we are not large people--and located outside the door of the kitchen. Since it was a nice summer evening, the kitchen staff had the door fully open, they spoke at the tops of their lungs up until about 10:45 PM. If we were younger and not into having a romantic getaway, perhaps we would not have retired at that time, but that was not the case. The bottomline: the condition (wallpaper seams puckering, dated linens, etc.) , size and location of the room were all wrong for us.

Now, to be fair, we did get the room last minute, and we got it at a nice price for the height of the summer. We also specifically asked about the condition and were told they renovated every room every five years. Since we asked this question, we think they should have said something.
This room was located in the "Riverhouse," #224 or 225.

After sharing our dissatisfaction with our room experience, we were upgraded to the "Federal building," which was a completely different--and lovely--experience. It was larger, freshly renovated, fresh linens, tub and larger bathroom, we LOVED it. Had we had this room the first night, we would have no qualms about recommending it 100% and giving it five stars.

Breakfast is bountiful and not as exciting as a B&B. Since the Inn is quite large, many people need to be served, so there is a buffet. It tasted to me like powdered eggs, packaged muffins, regular bread and English muffins. Fruit was fresh, and they had yogurt and homemade granola (the only thing homemade), one choice of cereal, bacon and sausage. So, again, plentiful but not homemade. As it comes with the room, it is a good deal.

The staff is excellent. They are pleasant and will do whatever they can for you. I was celebrating a birthday, and they acknowledged it. We had dinner at the well-known Dockside restaurant on site. The food was excellent--fresh and tastefully prepared...very inventive. That said, it was noisy (again loud kitchen) at 7:30 PM, lots of kids (though well behaved) and VERY casual for the type of restaurant. As this was a celebration, something more adult-oriented and romantic would have worked better for me. It was going out to dinner vs. dining out.

Insider's tip. They have a sister Inn near the ocean, and you can get pool privileges there. It is spectacular for relaxation and adult only. They also have a family-friendly pool at another resort. This was a HUGE plus for us.

If you want to go to the local beach, they also offer free parking passes and/or free bicycles. You put down a deposit, and it is returned when the bikes are returned.

In a nutshell, go, have fun and, before you do, make sure your room meets your expectations for size, condition and location.

Room Tip: See notes above.

Dear Ifleur04:

Thank you for your detailed trip advisor review. We are glad that, overall, you loved the Inn, staff, and service, and that your stay was ultimately enjoyable... At the same time, we appreciate the candor of your review and certainly take all of your your constructive feedback seriously. About a year and a half ago, the Inn's common spaces were beautifully renovated. Lots of care and thought went into improving the lobby, restaurant, and pool area (which is now the welcoming porch where you enjoyed breakfast overlooking the river)... It is our intent, with the same level of quality, to continue to renovate and improve a variety of other aspects of our Inn in the near future, namely some of our rooms. We are glad that you would have given us a 5 Star rating had your first room experience been the federal room you ultimately stayed in... If you'd like some idea of where we are headed with future renovations, you can certainly gain insights by taking a look at our sister properties at www.kennebunkportresortcollection.com. All of our properties exude a quality that is second to none, and we thoughtfully continue to strive to accomplish the same for our historic inn.

Thank you again for staying with us and we certrainly look forward to seeing you again!
