“Best breakfast of our entire New England trip!”
Reviewed February 15, 2010

These are not just people running an inn, these are people passionate about the area and the community. As soon as we were settled in the owner pulled out a map and showed us all of the best places to go in the Kennebunks and how to get there. They filled us in on all the local events taking place when we were there (even in the off-season this was an impressive list). They got us excited and made us feel like we belonged in Maine.

The quilts are beautiful and really add to the charm. We had a fire burning in our room, very romantic. The house itself is obviously old, but kept up and modernized enough to make it comfortable. Everything was impeccably clean (and I'm picky); we had booked a specific room based on what we saw online, but when we arrived there was another empty room so they let us choose which room we wanted...both were apparently kept clean and perfectly made up and ready for a guest.

The breakfast, ohhhh the breakfast. The homemade granola was delicious and healthy, and the french toast was made hot and fresh for us when we got downstairs. The table was set so pretty and the owners were able to casually join in the conversation with us and the other guests (not busy and rushed by their work).

We had a great time! We've already recommended it to friends looking to get away for a weekend.

I spent one night at the Waldo Emerson Inn Bed & Breakfast in October of 2009. First, driving up along the coast of MA took longer than expected and John was gracious about our late arrival to the inn. After showing us to our room, he made dinner reservations at an absolutely awesome sea food restaurant in Kennebunkport (often frequented by Mr. and Mrs. Bush). Our room was comfortable and clean. The bathroom, despite being small, functioned well. As for breakfast, John and Kathy served up a wonderful dish (double-layered french toast with a superb blueberry-cream cheese filling) complete with fruit, sausage, and a delicious homemade granola. The Inn is located just minutes away from Kennebunkport. In conclusion, we had a very enjoyable stay and I would certainly have no hesitation recommending this B&B to others.

Just came back from a Thanksgiving visit to family in Kennebunk. The Waldo Emerson proved to be a perfect base for us. The room was pretty and immaculately clean, the breakfast was marvelous (and enormous), and the innkeepers--John and Kathy--could not have been kinder or more accommodating. After this experience, we would not think of staying anywhere else in the area!

Arrived only to find that our room had been double booked and given to someone else. We had chosen this place very carefully and made reservations over a month in advance, so we were dumbfounded. The man who owns the inn called around and finally found another place for us after making 3 or 4 calls. He was very apologetic and even offered us a complimentary breakfast if we wanted to come back the next morning. Even so, it started our vacation on a sour note and I believe double booking is inexcusable.

Thank you for your kind words and understanding. As you remember we found ourselves with two different reservations with the same last name and had inadvertently erased one (yours) from our manual booking calendar. You arrived just about at the same time with the other party and you were so kind to accept the upgrade offer with a stay in a Kennebunkport area Inn.

The double booking is indeed inexcusable and based on that experience we have switched to a computerized booking system to prevent this from happening again.

We want to thank you for your understanding and helping us to make the change.

We hope that you would consider staying with us sometime in the future and giving us another change.

This is a truly very special place. A warm and friendly welcome was followed by a delightful room and breakfasts. The wonderfully historic house was perfectly furnished to be comfortable and cosy. Attention to detail both in meals and accommodation made our visit magical. John and Kathy were the most hospitable Innkeepers with whom we have stayed. Breakfast was exceptional and sociable. We would have no hesitation in returning time after time.

On a whim, my husband & I decided to drive to Maine and find restful getaway. We stopped at the state highway visitor center, got some names, called a few, and very luckily for us, the Waldo Emerson Inn happened to have a room available that Sunday night. John & Kathy Daamen welcomed us most graciously to the beautiful and comfortable inn, gave us a tour of the old home and stop on the Underground Railroad, and suggested some excellent restaurants and area highlights. After a restful night, we were treated to a wonderful breakfast prepared by John and Kathy (fabulous granola and fruit bread before the delicious & plentiful main course). We decided to stay two more nights so we could relax in the living rooms or on the grounds after leisurely days visiting the area, and enjoy more of those luscious breakfasts. Thank you again, John and Kathy, for making our serendipitous first trip to Maine so satisfying. Jim and Mary Kay Sisson, Brenham, Texas

We visited Kennebunkport for July 4th and spent two nights there. Kennebunkport is a wonderful little town with cute shops, tasty food, nice beaches, and friendly people. We really enjoyed ourselves and our weekend was topped off with a spectacular fireworks display on the beach.

We loved the Waldo Emerson Inn. John and Kathy were terrific hosts - not sure why others found them overbearing or unfriendly; they gave us a informative tour of the historic property and then other than some friendly conversation during breakfast, basically left us alone. Waldo, was a gem - I've never met a dog so adorable!

The richly decorated rooms rooms were clean, comfortable, with AC and wireless internet connection and private bathroom. The quilts added a gorgeous touch. Before heading to sleep, my family members and I also spent some time chatting away and catching up in one of the two comfortable parlors. Despite the fact that the inn was full, it was still very quiet inside. Our only complaint - the Red Room - where we stayed, faced the road and thus we could hear the traffic. If we find our way back to Kennebunkport, we'll have to request a room in the back.

What else? The breakfast was delicious - Kathy's gronola homemade gronola was some of the best I've ever had and thus we purchased some to take home and she gave us her recipe. In addition, we had 3 different types of pancakes one day and gourmet french toast the second. Fresh fruit and juices, coffee and tea were served. They generously offered seconds, though we we could barely finish our meal!

One thing to note - the inn is a couple of miles from center of town. We had to drive around for 10 minutes to find parking during the holiday weekend, but didn't mind so much.

Overall we really enjoyed ourselves. For $165 per night (including $20 for the third person), I really believe the inn was a geat find in Kennebunkport. My family and I plan on heading back one day soon!
