Pizzas cooked in the wood-burning oven include classics, pizza margherita with tomato, basil, mozzarella and extra virgin olive oil, as well as the more imaginative, such as pizza salsiccia with sausage, pickled chilis, provolone and roasted peppers. We can not get enough of this place. We have been going at least once a week for a while now and each visit outshines the last. Thanks for the seats near the warm fire, the kind and caring service and the delicious food. We love all the new items! Keep up the good work!

I recently attended a dinner hosted in the Grotto in our honor (wedding weekend.) The ambiance, service and food were all top notch. It was the perfect place to have a special dinner and the food was excellent. Many of my fellow guests are Italian and very picky when it comes to Italian food - they all raved about it.

Definitely visit this great gem in the heart of Kennebunk.

Entering Abbondante's brings about the expectation of a wonderful Italian meal. Prepare to be disappointed. While the bar is worthwhile for a drink the food is mediocre at best. Pastas over cooked, sauces not up to par, bland salads and if my desert was typical of the others on the menu save your money. Tiramisu was nothing but a blob of creme. And all of this for a hefty price tag.

We had dinner at Abbondante last evening with friends . Our meals were excellent . James our waiter ,made things happen.
Place can be noisy when busy. Our only concern was calling for reservations. No listing on 911 finally asked for Grizzini's . Bingo ,number, if we were not locals we might not have known .Place was full ,so other folks found a way to make reservations ! Therefore, must not be a serious problem for them?
We will return, thanks James.

Abbondante Trattoria in Kennebunk occupies the former site of Grissini Italian Bistro. Its attractive, barn-like structure was nicely appointed, with impressive light fixtures that used a wagon-wheel-like template and held a multitude of large-filament bulbs which radiated a warm glow over its large space. Some wooden display cases that aligned the walls held large jars containing a variety of dried pasta. A large, rustic fireplace emitted a subtle, smoky aroma, which in no way competed with the cuisine. It was cleverly raised from the floor making it visible to most tables.

The tables, which were well-spaced, had butcher paper placed over their table cloths. The chairs were reminiscent of café chairs in Europe. Some deuces, however, seemed awkwardly placed – unanchored from a comfortable niche. The noise level, for the most part, did not initially compete with our conversation. However, as the night progressed, it became somewhat distracting.

A bread basket arrived with a side of hummus – creamy and light in texture. It was surprising that the bread selection was nothing remarkable. The basket would have benefitted by a more flavorful and crusty assortment. While the hummus was quite good, I would have preferred a fragrant olive oil.

Our party of three waived the first course and dessert (even though the tiramisu looked appealing and sizable enough to share). The tagliatelle fra diavolo was devoid of “diavolo” – there was no discernible inclusion of hot pepper. Perhaps the menu could be modified to provide three choices of heat: none, mid-range, or “diavolo” range. While it was devoid of heat, the seafood was flavorful and the pasta cooked al dente.

The lasagna with eggplant, mozzarella, sausage, prosciutto, and ricotta was excellent, although the prosciutto was dominated by the other ingredients and was not discernible. Generous amounts of savory sausage compensated for this shortcoming. The ricotta gave a lightness and creaminess to the entrée. The eggplant parmigiana was also well executed: it was tender and flavorful and was served with a sweet red sauce (as was the lasagna). All portions were sizable. A full-bodied, bold Barbera was an excellent choice.

The dinner was well prepared and presented. While it would most likely not receive a Michelin mention or star, Abbondante is a decent restaurant and is a nice addition to the restaurant landscape in Kennebunk.
